Bed head unit light is easy to underestimate. A bed head unit with light must serve the patient who wants to read, the nurse who must examine a wound, the family at the bedside and the sleeping patient at three in the morning. This guide for planners, nurses and buyers explains the four lighting functions, how they are combined in a unit and what to specify for patient rooms.
Why lighting belongs in the bed head unit
Putting the light in the bed head unit keeps the wiring, controls and mounting together with gas outlets and sockets, and leaves the ceiling free from many fittings. It also places the light at the head of the bed where it is needed, and allows one design, one cleaning routine and one maintenance access.
A bed head unit with light also lets the room feel calmer. Indirect lighting that washes the wall and low-level night light avoid the glare of a single bright ceiling luminaire above a lying patient.
The four functions of hospital bed head light
Reading light is a focused, adjustable lamp that the patient can switch on without help, ideally with a control within reach. Examination light is brighter and more neutral, for the nurse or doctor to inspect skin, wounds or devices, and is normally operated by staff. Ambient or indirect light provides general illumination without glare. Night light is a very low, orientation-level glow that does not wake the patient or disturb neighbours.
Specify each function separately and decide who controls it. A single controller for all lights, as on the VEGA unit, makes switching easy, while separate patient and staff controls allow the examination lamp to be used without altering the patient's reading light.
- Reading light: focused, patient-controlled
- Examination light: brighter, neutral, staff-controlled
- Indirect light: soft ambient illumination
- Night light: low-level orientation glow
Bed head unit with light: product examples
The VEGA is an illuminated bed head unit for standard patient rooms. It accepts lighting, standard medical rails and nurse-call systems, and examination or reading lamps and shelves mount on the medical rail, with one controller switching all the lights.
The RN07-DN2 can be fitted with biodynamic direct, indirect and night LED lighting. Biodynamic lighting is intended to follow the rhythm of the day, and the choice of colour temperatures and control should be agreed with the clinical team and the interior designer.
What to specify for patient rooms
Define the lighting functions, the control locations, dimming, the colour rendering and colour temperature for examination, and how the lights are switched on at night. Check glare from the patient's eye position, and ensure that the reading lamp can be positioned without reaching over the patient. Consider maintenance: LED modules, accessible drivers and cleanable lenses.
Electrical safety and the classification of examination lamps follow the applicable device standards, such as IEC 60601-1 where relevant, so ask the supplier to confirm what applies to the product you are buying and the regulatory status in the UAE.
Integrating light with other services
Light should not be considered alone. Nurse call, medical gas outlets, sockets and shelves share the same unit, so agree the layout together. For general information on the unit, see bed head unit specification and bed head unit design.

What is biodynamic lighting?
Lighting that varies in intensity and colour to follow the rhythm of the day. The RN07-DN2 offers biodynamic direct, indirect and night LED lighting.
Is a night light necessary?

Can lamps be added later?
On the VEGA, examination or reading lamps and shelves mount on the medical rail, which allows adjustment.
