FESS instruments and equipment make up a compact but demanding set: functional endoscopic sinus surgery depends on a sharp image in a narrow space, precise hand instruments and controlled tissue removal. A complete FESS set combines rigid sinuscopes, a camera and light source, an ENT shaver with suction, forceps and punches and, in many units, a navigation system. This guide explains each element and what to check when you assemble or renew a set.
Sinuscopes and the imaging chain
The sinuscope is a slim rigid telescope, usually 4 mm in diameter, with 0, 30 and 70 degree directions of view; some units also use 45 degrees. The 0 and 30 degree scopes cover most of the work, while angled scopes help see frontal and maxillary recesses. Confirm the exact diameters and lengths with your surgeons, and see our guide to rigid endoscope sizes.
Behind the scope sits the camera, light source and monitor. ENDOCAM Logic HD is an all-in-one imaging system with an LED light source, light cables, monitors and a choice of camera heads. Its dialog function lets the camera control the light source automatically, and Full HD video recording to USB with still-image memory supports documentation. The PENDUAL pendulum head can be converted to a straight head, which suits different handling preferences.
ENT shaver and suction
A shaver, or microdebrider, removes polyps and tissue through a rotating blade with built-in suction, improving visibility and speed. Nouvag's Hybrid ENT Shaver handpiece is lightweight at 170 g, available in straight, concave and convex versions, and runs at 300 to 6,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 12 Ncm. Tissue passes through the window of the rotating blade and the handpiece's suction channel to the container of the connected vacuum pump.
A quick-release fastener makes the handpiece easy to turn and fix, and the motor coupling is INTRA (ISO 3964). When choosing a system, check blade availability and types, handpiece sterilisation compatibility, motor and foot control, and the suction pump. Blade supply is a recurring cost, so ask about pack sizes and reusable options.
Hand instruments for the FESS set
A standard sinus surgery instruments set includes nasal specula, a suction tube, curettes, straight and angled through-cutting forceps, grasping forceps, punches in several angles, a ball probe, a seeker and a sinus irrigation cannula. REDA's ENT range lists Hartmann, Killian and Cottle nasal specula, septum elevators, rasps, and Blakesley and Weil-Blakesley nasal and sinus forceps.
Quality of the cutting edges and the alignment of jaws determine how cleanly tissue is removed and how much trauma occurs. Specify instruments in the set list by name, angle and working length, and plan the quantity to cover turnover. Include a sterilisation tray designed for fine instruments. Our ENT rigid nasal endoscope guide gives more on optics.
Navigation basics and room setup
Image-guided navigation is used in complex or revision cases to correlate the instrument position with the patient's CT scan. A navigation system needs a tracker, a registration method and software loaded with the scan. It is an addition to, not a replacement for, endoscopic skill. Decide with your surgeons whether navigation is part of the core set or a shared resource.
Plan the tower so that the monitor is in the surgeon's line of sight, the shaver console and foot pedals are reachable and cables do not cross the field. For wider planning see our overview of the ENT endoscopy tower.
Reprocessing, compatibility and next steps
Narrow sinus instruments have small lumens that need brushes and flushing adapters, so follow the manufacturer's reprocessing instructions. Confirm that your sterilisation method suits sinuscopes, shaver handpieces and cables. Check compatibility between the telescope eyepiece, coupler and light cable.

Frequently asked questions
What is in a basic FESS set?
Sinuscopes, camera and light source, monitor, a shaver with suction, nasal specula, forceps, punches, curettes and irrigation. Navigation is optional.
What angles of sinuscope are needed?
Most units use 0 and 30 degree scopes, with 45 or 70 degree scopes for specific recesses. Confirm with your surgeons.
What speeds do ENT shavers run at?
The Nouvag Hybrid ENT Shaver handpiece covers 300 to 6,000 rpm. Check the speed range and torque against your needs.
Is navigation required for FESS?
Not for every case. It is often used for complex or revision surgery; decide based on your caseload and surgeons.
