What is IFU in sterile processing and why does it govern every step?

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

What is IFU in sterile processing? It is the manufacturer's instructions for use, and for reusable devices it includes validated reprocessing instructions that tell the CSSD how to clean, disinfect, inspect, pack and sterilise the item. This guide explains ISO 17664, what a good IFU contains, how to manage a library of IFUs and what to do when instructions conflict.

What is IFU in sterile processing and why it matters

Instructions for use are supplied by the manufacturer and are part of the medical device. For a reusable instrument, container or endoscope, the manufacturer must validate at least one method of reprocessing and describe it. Using a different method moves responsibility to the hospital, which may then have to prove equivalence.

ISO 17664 specifies the information that manufacturers provide for processing resterilisable medical devices. In practice the IFU sets limits that are easy to overlook: which detergents are compatible, the maximum temperature, the number of cycles, whether the item can be immersed, and the exact sterilization parameters. These manufacturer instructions for reprocessing are the baseline of every CSSD SOP.

What a good reprocessing IFU contains

Look for these elements and escalate to the supplier if any are missing:

For rigid containers, the instruction normally covers cleaning of the lid, base, gasket and locks, filter or valve inspection and replacement, validated loading and the sterilization methods permitted. REDA sterilization containers and their accessories (filters, baskets, indicator labels, Auto Lock) come with such instructions, which should be filed with the container model.

  • Point-of-use treatment and transport.
  • Preparation, disassembly and cleaning (manual and automated).
  • Disinfection, rinsing and drying conditions.
  • Inspection, maintenance and function testing.
  • Packaging, sterilization methods and parameters (temperature, time, cycle type).
  • Storage and handling, and limits such as cycle life or materials not allowed.

Managing a library of IFUs

A CSSD can handle hundreds of device types, so IFU management must be systematic. Keep a controlled index listing device, manufacturer, document number, version and date, who reviewed it and where the copy is kept. Track IFUs per set so the technician can find the right one at the point of use. Instrument reprocessing steps gives the process into which IFUs are inserted.

Review on a defined cycle and whenever a new version is issued by the manufacturer. Version changes can affect cleaning chemistry or cycle parameters. Ask each supplier to notify you of changes, and include IFU delivery as a requirement in your purchase specifications. Digital libraries linked to instrument sets are increasingly used; see surgical instrument tracking systems.

When IFUs conflict with your equipment or each other

Conflicts arise when two devices in one set require different parameters, or when the IFU prescribes a method your equipment does not offer. In such cases, take the most restrictive validated requirement that covers all items, or split the set. Never guess. Contact the manufacturer for written clarification and record the decision in your quality system.

Differences between instruments and containers also matter. A container validated for steam at one temperature may not be validated for plasma, as with models designed for a specific sterilization method. Brand documentation, such as that available from the REDA brand page, should be compared with your cycle programmes before first use.

Training, audit and supplier support

Training should explain how to find an IFU, how to read symbols and how to escalate gaps. Auditors check that the IFU in use matches the item in front of the technician and that deviations are documented. A supplier that provides full documentation and responds to questions reduces your risk. Frequently asked questions

What is IFU in sterile processing?

The manufacturer's instructions for use, including validated instructions for cleaning, disinfecting, packing and sterilising a reusable device.

What is ISO 17664?

A standard that sets out the information manufacturers must provide for processing resterilisable medical devices.

Can a CSSD change the reprocessing method?

Only if it can demonstrate equivalence and document validation. Otherwise follow the manufacturer's validated method.

What if two IFUs in one set conflict?

Use the most restrictive validated parameters covering all items, split the set, or obtain written clarification from the manufacturers.
