How CPT codes are used in UAE claims

CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) is a coding system published by the American Medical Association. In the UAE, claims submitted to insurers through the electronic claims systems associated with DHA in Dubai and DOH in Abu Dhabi commonly use CPT-based service codes, although each authority publishes its own schedules and rules.

Digital mammography CPT code: screening and diagnostic

Commonly referenced codes are 77067 for bilateral screening mammography, 77065 for unilateral diagnostic mammography and 77066 for bilateral diagnostic mammography. The bilateral digital mammography CPT code therefore depends on whether the examination is screening or diagnostic.

The distinction matters for billing and for the workflow. A screening examination is performed on asymptomatic women, while a diagnostic examination is performed to evaluate a symptom or an abnormal screening result, often with additional views. Define the difference clearly in your package descriptions.

Tomosynthesis CPT code

Tomosynthesis has been reported with codes 77061 (unilateral), 77062 (bilateral) and 77063 (screening, reported together with screening mammography). The CPT code set for breast imaging has been revised in recent editions, so verify whether your edition reports tomosynthesis separately or combined with the mammography code.

Stereotactic biopsy CPT code and mammogram biopsy CPT code

Percutaneous breast biopsy with imaging guidance is reported with codes selected by guidance type. For stereotactic guidance 19081 is commonly referenced for the first lesion and 19082 for each additional lesion in the same breast. Ultrasound guidance uses 19083 and 19084, and MRI guidance 19085 and 19086.

Common billing errors to avoid

Frequent problems include billing a screening code for a diagnostic examination, omitting laterality, reporting the same service twice when a combined protocol is used, and missing documentation of the guidance method for biopsies. Denials usually trace back to documentation rather than the code itself.

Run periodic audits on a sample of claims, track denial reasons by payer and feed the findings back into the RIS templates and staff training.

Practical tips for imaging centres

Keep a coding table in your RIS mapped to the exact procedure names, update it with each CPT edition and train front-desk and billing staff. Document the laterality, the guidance method, the number of lesions and clip placement in the report so the code can be supported.
