The Mayo Stand Explained: Uses, Sizes and Selection

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

A Mayo stand is the small, mobile instrument tray that sits over the patient's lower body or the operating table and holds the instruments the surgeon is using right now. It looks simple, yet its height range, tray size, stability and cleaning all affect speed and safety in the theatre. This guide explains what a Mayo stand is, how it is used and what OR buyers should compare.

What is a Mayo stand and what is it used for?

A Mayo stand, also called a Mayo table or Mayo tray stand, is a height-adjustable stand with a removable tray. The scrub nurse covers the tray with a sterile drape and arranges the instruments for the current step of the operation, so the surgeon can reach them without turning away from the field. Typical Mayo stand uses include holding scalpels, scissors, forceps, needle holders, sutures and swabs.

It differs from the larger back table, which carries the full set-up. In practice, the nurse moves items from the back table onto the Mayo stand as the case progresses. For the larger table, see our article on the operating room back table.

Mayo stands on wheels: mobile, foot-operated and electric

Almost every Mayo stand is on wheels so it can be placed and removed quickly. Basic versions adjust height with a manual crank or lever. Foot-operated models use a pedal so the nurse keeps both hands sterile and free. Electric models raise and lower the tray with a motor. Each approach trades simplicity against convenience and cost.

The Lojer electric Mayo table adjusts height completely hands-free with a foot control: one side of the button lowers the worktop and the other raises it. The range is 960 to 1260 mm. It runs on three antistatic castors, locked with brakes in the wheels.

Mayo stand sizes and tray options

Tray size decides how much can be laid out within reach. A larger tray holds more instruments but takes more space over the patient and can interfere with anaesthesia access or imaging. The Lojer electric Mayo table is offered with two worktop sizes, 700 × 500 mm and 640 × 400 mm, and the worktop can be rotated horizontally by 45, 90 and 180 degrees in both directions, which helps position it over the patient or to the side.

A small Mayo table is useful for short procedures and minor surgery, while a larger tray suits long or complex cases. Check lifting capacity as well: this model lifts 50 kg with the worktop at 0 degrees and 30 kg in other positions.

  • Tray dimensions and whether the tray is removable
  • Height range for seated and standing nurses
  • Load capacity in each tray position
  • Castor type, locks and base stability

Construction, cleaning and safety

Choose a stand with smooth stainless steel or coated surfaces that tolerates your disinfectants. Fewer crevices mean faster turnover. Antistatic castors with locks keep the stand from drifting during the case. The base must not tip when the tray is loaded to its rated weight.

Never exceed the rated tray load, and use the brakes whenever the stand is in position. Train staff on the correct height-adjustment method for the model you buy.

Finally, think about numbers. Many theatres use one Mayo stand per surgeon plus a spare for assistants or special instruments, and a stand that is easy to move and lock in place makes that arrangement practical.

Buying a Mayo stand for sale in the UAE

When you look for a Mayo stand for sale, compare tray sizes, height range, adjustment method, finish and warranty rather than price alone. Ask about spare parts, replacement trays and drapes, and confirm registration requirements with the relevant UAE authority.
