ISO 11197 Medical Supply Units and IEC 60601 for Ceiling Pendants

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

ISO 11197 medical supply units is the standard most often cited when hospitals write tenders for ceiling pendants, bed-head units and service columns. It works together with IEC 60601-1 for electrical safety and the pipeline standards for gases. This guide explains what each document is for, what evidence to request from a supplier and how to write standards into a specification without overreaching.

What ISO 11197 covers

ISO 11197 specifies requirements for medical supply units, the ceiling- or wall-mounted devices that bring medical gases, electrical power, data and sometimes other services to the point of care. It addresses design, mechanical safety, performance, gas and electrical arrangements, marking and information to be supplied. Pendants, bed-head units and booms all fall within the idea of a supply unit.

Read the current edition, because requirements and references have been revised over time. A tender should name the edition, or state 'latest edition', and ask the supplier to declare conformity and to list any deviations. Do not assume that every pendant on the market is certified to the same scope.

IEC 60601 ceiling pendant requirements and electrical safety

Because a pendant carries electrical outlets and supports medical devices, the general standard for medical electrical equipment, IEC 60601-1, is relevant. It deals with protection against electric shock, mechanical hazards, fire, and the safe integration of equipment into medical electrical systems. Pendant electrical safety also depends on the installation: protective earth, equipotential bonding and circuit protection.

Manufacturers publish electrical ratings. Lojer's Solido pendants list a supply voltage of 100-230 VAC at 50/60 Hz, up to 2000 W per socket and IP20 protection, and these ratings should be read together with the installation design. Ask for the declaration of conformity and the test reports relevant to the pendant, not only to individual components.

  • Electrical: protection against shock, earth leakage, bonding and socket ratings
  • Mechanical: stability, load capacity, brakes and arm strength
  • Hygiene and materials: cleanable surfaces and compatible coatings
  • Documentation: instructions for use, marking and technical file

Gas outlets, mechanical load and labelling

For gases, the pendant's terminal units and quick couplings must match the hospital's pipeline system and be installed under the pipeline standard, for example ISO 7396-1. Outlets are available to different national standards; MZ Liberec lists DIN, AFNOR, BS and AGA among others on its TAURUS pendant. Specify which one your hospital uses.

Mechanical requirements matter for pendants that carry heavy loads on moving arms. TAURUS lists arm loads up to 500 kg for a single 850 mm arm and shelf loads up to 60 kg, and its OK07 family offers rigid, rotary and height-adjustable models. Ask how load capacity was verified, which test was used and how brakes are tested. Labelling should identify each gas and electrical circuit clearly and permanently; see pendant configuration checklist.

Writing the standards into a tender

A practical clause asks the supplier to state conformity with ISO 11197 and IEC 60601-1 as applicable, to supply a declaration of conformity and test reports on request, to list the gas standards of the outlets, and to provide installation drawings with load data. Add a requirement for a technical file, instructions for use in the project languages, and service documentation.

Keep the wording factual. Avoid demanding approvals that do not apply to the product category. Registration of the device and the supplier is handled through the competent authorities, such as MOHAP at federal level, with DHA in Dubai and DOH in Abu Dhabi licensing facilities and professionals; confirm the current requirements before you issue the tender. For customs, ask your broker to confirm the classification and HS code for the exact product rather than relying on a generic heading.

Evidence to request and next steps

Request: declaration of conformity, applicable test reports, installation drawings with load and connection data, instructions for use, cleaning and maintenance instructions, and spare-parts and service availability. Compare the same package across bidders. For installation context see installation requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What does ISO 11197 apply to?

It sets requirements for medical supply units that bring gases, power and data to the point of care, such as pendants, bed-head units and booms.

Is IEC 60601-1 relevant to pendants?

Yes, because pendants carry electrical outlets and support medical devices. Ask for the declaration of conformity and test reports.

Which gas outlet standard should I choose?

Match the one used in your hospital pipeline, for example DIN, AFNOR, BS or AGA, and state it in the tender.

Can I rely on a catalogue to prove conformity?

No. Ask for the declaration of conformity and test documents and confirm current registration requirements with the UAE authorities.
