Digital AVSU from MZ Liberec: Features and Selection

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

A digital AVSU is an area valve service unit that shows the pressure of each isolated gas on an electronic display instead of dial gauges. The MZ Liberec version handles up to six gas lines, adds pressure sensors and an LED status display, and links to the MZU II warning unit. This overview explains how it works and what to check before specifying it.

What an area valve service unit is for

An area valve service unit, or AVSU, is a lockable shut-off point that allows one zone of a medical gas pipeline to be isolated from the rest of the system. Zones are typically a ward, a theatre suite or a floor. The AVSU is meant solely for emergencies, such as a fire or a major leak, and for planned maintenance. It is not an everyday control, and staff should be trained not to use it casually.

A well-planned AVSU layout means that a fault or a repair in one department does not interrupt oxygen or vacuum to the rest of the building. Our overview of the area valve service unit explains placement rules and the logic of zoning in more detail.

Key features of the MZ Liberec digital AVSU

The digital AVSU shuts off the flow of gas to the next distribution area. Pressure sensors warn of non-standard pressure in the area concerned, and an LED display shows current pressure values and OK or error status. Up to six gas lines can be connected in a single box. The body is aluminium with an antibacterial surface, and the emergency lock can be broken open so that staff can close the valves without searching for a key.

The unit is available for built-in or wall-mounted installation, with an optional alarm system, and it can be connected to the MZU II monitoring device. An analogue version with pressure gauges is also offered by the manufacturer, which allows the same zoning concept to be priced either way.

  • Up to 6 gas lines per box
  • LED display of pressure and OK/error status
  • Pressure sensors with warning of abnormal pressure
  • Break-open emergency lock
  • Aluminium body with antibacterial surface
  • Built-in or wall-mounted; link to MZU II

Digital or analogue: which suits your project

Analogue boxes are simple, familiar and do not depend on power. A reader can see the dial pressure at a glance, and there is nothing electronic to fail. A digital unit gives a clearer reading of OK or error, supports a remote alarm and allows monitoring from a central panel, which is useful in large hospitals where the AVSU is hidden in a corridor wall.

Many projects choose digital units for critical areas such as ICUs and theatres, and analogue ones elsewhere, to balance cost and information. Whichever you choose, the alarm design matters more than the display type. See our article on the medical gas alarm system, and the pairing of the AVSU with the MZU II warning unit.

Installation and specification checklist

Mount the AVSU where staff can reach it quickly in an emergency but patients and visitors cannot, normally in a corridor outside the zone it serves, at a height set by the project design. Label each valve clearly with the gas and the zone, and keep a framed schematic nearby. Never place an AVSU behind a locked door without an alternative route to the key.

In the specification, state the number and type of gases per box, built-in or wall-mounted, with or without alarm contacts, outlet connection type and pipe sizes, and the required labelling language. Ask the supplier for the installation manual, test records and spare-part availability. Authority expectations differ between DHA, DOH and MOHAP, so confirm them with your consultant.

Price and supply

The price of an area valve service unit depends on the number of gases, pipe diameter, built-in or wall-mounted format, and whether alarm contacts are fitted, so a catalogue figure rarely fits a real project. Give the supplier your zone schedule and we can quote against it. Frequently asked questions

How many gas lines can one digital AVSU connect?

Up to six gas lines, according to the manufacturer.

Can an AVSU be used for routine shut-off?

No. It is intended solely for emergencies and maintenance. Routine isolation should be done with the proper valves for the task.

Is there an analogue alternative?

Yes, MZ Liberec also offers an analogue version with pressure gauges.

Can the digital AVSU be connected to an alarm panel?

It can be connected to the MZU II monitoring device, and an optional alarm system is available.
