MILs Oxygen Concentrator: On-Site Oxygen for Hospital Pipelines

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

The MILs oxygen concentrator from MZ Liberec separates nitrogen from air with molecular sieves and produces oxygen-enriched air with 93 to 95% oxygen for a hospital pipeline. It is available in six sizes from 3 to 48 Nm³/h of O₂. This overview explains how it works, where it fits in a hospital oxygen strategy and what engineers should verify before specifying it.

How the MIL's oxygen concentrators work

MIL's oxygen concentrators use molecular sieves that separate nitrogen from oxygen by the different size of their molecules. The result is oxygen-enriched air with 93 to 95% oxygen. According to the manufacturer, this gas may replace medical oxygen provided all required parameters are met, which is the key phrase for any project team: acceptance depends on your specification and on what your authority and consultant accept.

The concentrators are available in six sizes with production capacities from 3 to 48 Nm³/h of O₂ and provide an on-site oxygen source for the hospital pipeline. For the basic principle, see our explainer on how an oxygen concentrator works.

Where a concentrator fits: hospital oxygen supply sources

A typical hospital combines sources: an on-site generator for the base load, a reserve of cylinders or liquid oxygen, and an emergency supply. A concentrator gives independence from delivery logistics, which is valuable where deliveries are unpredictable, and it avoids storing large cylinder volumes. Compare the options in hospital oxygen supply sources and oxygen concentrators versus cylinders.

The 93 to 95% concentration is not the same as 99% oxygen from cylinders or liquid supply, so check with the clinical team and the consultant which services can run on it and which need a different source. Our note on 93% versus 99% oxygen covers the discussion.

Sizing the plant from consumption

Start with the demand: beds by category, theatres, ventilators, and the peak rather than the average. A method is given in hospital oxygen consumption calculation. The consultant defines the design flow and the redundancy, and the plant should still cover essential demand with one unit out of service.

Most projects pair the concentrator with a buffer receiver and a backup source with automatic changeover, so that a fault in the generator never leaves the pipeline without oxygen. Also ask for monitoring of purity and flow, with alarms linked to the central warning panel.

Remember that a concentrator is a continuous-duty plant: it is happiest running steadily near its design point. A very oversized unit running at low load wastes energy and sieve life, whereas an undersized one forces the backup source to cover too much. Size for the realistic base load and let the reserve handle peaks.

Installation, purity monitoring and maintenance

Plan the plant room with ventilation, space for the compressor and air treatment that feeds the unit, access for service, and the oxygen-safe materials and fire precautions that oxygen systems need. Confirm what UAE rules apply to storage and plant rooms with Civil Defence and your health authority (DHA, DOH or MOHAP).

Purity must be proven at commissioning and continuously monitored in operation. Sieve beds, valves and filters need scheduled service; the practical points are listed in oxygen concentrator maintenance. Ask the supplier for the manual, the spare parts list and the expected service intervals.

Ask also about the electrical load, the feed-air quality required, and what happens to the plant on a mains failure. These interface points are where most commissioning delays occur.

Frequently asked questions

What oxygen concentration do MIL's concentrators produce?

Oxygen-enriched air with 93 to 95% oxygen, according to the manufacturer.

What capacities are available?

Six sizes with production capacities from 3 to 48 Nm³/h of O₂.

Can the gas replace medical oxygen?

According to the manufacturer it may, provided all required parameters are met. Confirm acceptance with your consultant and the authority.

Do I still need a backup supply?

Yes, in practice a reserve source with automatic changeover is standard so that supply continues if the generator is out of service.
