There is no single best surgical light, because the answer depends on your procedures, room, budget and service access. Surgical light manufacturers range from specialist lighting companies to large operating-room equipment groups, and each offers different optics, controls and support. This guide gives hospital buyers a neutral method to shortlist brands, plus facts on the two brands Beckfinity distributes.
Why there is no universal best operating room light
A light that is ideal for a cardiac theatre with laminar airflow may be more than a day-surgery unit needs, while a compact light that suits minor procedures cannot meet the demands of long, deep surgery. Rankings that name a best surgical light without stating the application are marketing, not evidence.
Instead of asking which brand is best, define your use case: procedures, number of rooms, ceiling constraints, camera and integration needs, emergency power and service expectations. Then test each manufacturer against the same list.
Neutral criteria for comparing manufacturers
Use measurable criteria from the data sheet and test reports. Compare central illuminance, light-field diameter, depth of illumination, colour rendering and colour temperature range, shadow-dilution results and LED lifetime, all as defined in IEC 60601-2-41. Then compare mechanics: arm range, drift-free positioning, suspension options and the ability to expand later.
Add commercial criteria: local service presence, response time, spare parts, training, warranty and registration status in the UAE. Names such as Stryker, Steris or Skytron appear on many shortlists; evaluate any of them by asking the same questions, and rely on their own documentation for their specifications.
Keep a record of each answer in a scoring matrix, weighting the criteria that matter most to your hospital, such as service response time or camera integration, so that the final choice can be defended to the tender committee. Avoid awarding points for claims that cannot be documented.
- Optical performance and test reports to IEC 60601-2-41
- Colour rendering, colour temperature and dimming
- Arm design, suspension and expandability
- Camera, monitor and integration options
- Service network, spare parts and training
- Product registration and documentation for the UAE
SIMEON Medical: a German lighting specialist

After years of OEM development it launched its own HighLine surgical light in 2009. Its products are manufactured in Germany and sold through partners in more than 90 countries.
The HighLine Sim.LED 8000 is the flagship, with 160,000 lx at 1 m, active shadow management with sensors, up to 99 user profiles and a dimmable endoscopy light, and it received a Red Dot Award in 2025. The range continues with the HighLine 5000, the BusinessLine series, compact examination lights and Sim.CAM cameras. See the SIMEON brand page for the full range.
Lojer and Merivaara: Finnish OR equipment
Lojer Group, a Finnish manufacturer founded in 1919, acquired Merivaara in 2022, adding operating tables, surgical lights, OR integration and medical pendants. These OR products continue under the Merivaara brand, with production in Lahti, Finland, and Merivaara operates in more than 120 countries.
The Q-Flow surgical light range is designed for low air turbulence, with 15.9 percent turbulence intensity for 700 mm heads, Ra 98, more than 60,000 hours of LED lifetime and Fluent, Vision and Intelligent versions. Details of the brand are on the Lojer brand page. A deeper look at the model is in the Q-Flow overview.
Running a fair evaluation
Ask each shortlisted manufacturer for the same documents, arrange demonstrations in an equipped room, and score the results with your clinical and biomedical teams. Check references that you can verify yourself and avoid relying on market-share claims.
If you want SIMEON or Lojer included in your comparison, Beckfinity can provide data sheets, arrange demonstrations and prepare a quotation to your specification. Our guide on how to choose a surgical light gives a step-by-step checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best surgical light?
There is no universal answer. The best light is the one that meets your procedures, room, service and budget requirements when tested against the same criteria as the alternatives.
Are German or Finnish surgical lights better?
Origin alone does not decide quality. Compare tested performance, documentation, service and registration, not the country of origin.
What documents should a manufacturer provide?
Data sheet, IEC 60601-2-41 test report, user and service manuals, warranty terms, spare parts policy and UAE registration status.
Should I buy from the manufacturer or a distributor?
A local authorised distributor can provide registration support, installation and service. Ask for proof of authorisation from the manufacturer.
