Sending contrast injection data to PACS means that every injection is documented automatically, with the media, volumes and times attached to the patient's study rather than written down by hand. This article explains how an injector DICOM interface works, what a contrast dose report contains, why it matters for audits, safety and quality, and which questions to ask a supplier. The functions described come from the ulrich medical RIS/PACS Interface.
Why document contrast injections
Contrast media are medicinal products, and departments are expected to record what was given, when and how much. Manual documentation is time-consuming and error-prone: a figure copied from the injector screen can be misread, delayed or forgotten at the end of a busy list.
Reliable contrast media documentation supports audits and incident review, helps radiologists check a later complaint against the record and gives the department data for quality improvement, such as comparing volumes across protocols. It also feeds contrast dose management where the hospital has such a system.
How the injector DICOM interface works
DICOM is the standard used throughout imaging IT. With the ulrich medical RIS/PACS Interface, the patient is selected from the DICOM worklist on the injector's touch terminal, the media in use (saline and contrast) are assigned and the injection protocol is chosen. A workflow navigation bar guides staff through each step.
When the injection is finished, a contrast media dose report is sent automatically to PACS and/or the dose management system. The software option is available for CT motion and CT motion SPICY, and DICOM Conformance Statements are available for download so your IT team can check the details.
Data accuracy depends on discipline at the console. If the worklist is not used and the patient is entered manually, the report may not match the study in PACS. Make selection from the worklist the rule, and train staff on what to do when the patient is not listed.
- Patient selection from the DICOM worklist at the injector
- Assignment of saline and contrast media and protocol choice
- Automatic dose report to PACS and/or dose management
- Workflow navigation bar on the touch terminal
Media Scan and traceability
On CT motion SPICY the interface licence also includes Media Scan, which reads media labels by barcode scanner. This reduces keying errors and helps trace the product and batch that was used. It also allows NaCl and contrast parameters to be sent together to PACS or dose management, as covered in our SPICY overview.
For the standard CT motion, check with the supplier which identification functions are available in your configuration.
Traceability also supports recalls and pharmacovigilance: if a batch of contrast is withdrawn, a record that links batch, patient and time makes it much easier to identify the studies concerned than searching paper logs.
What to check before integration
Involve your IT and PACS administrators early. Ask for the DICOM Conformance Statement and verify that your RIS can serve a worklist to the injector, that PACS accepts the report in the expected format and that the network path is secure. Define who maintains the connection and who responds to faults.
Plan the data governance too: who may view or edit records, how long they are kept and how they link to the scanner dose record. If you also connect the injector to the scanner, see our scanner interface article.
Run a test period before go-live. Send a number of test injections to a non-production PACS, check that the reports arrive with the correct patient, media and volumes, and agree how errors, such as a rejected message, are reported to the department.

Frequently asked questions
What does the RIS/PACS Interface do?
It integrates CT motion or CT motion SPICY into hospital IT using DICOM. The patient is chosen from the worklist and a contrast dose report goes to PACS and/or dose management when the injection ends.
Does it work with CT motion SPICY barcode scanning?
Yes, on CT motion SPICY the licence also includes Media Scan for reading media labels by barcode.
Where can I find the DICOM details?
DICOM Conformance Statements are available for download from the manufacturer; ask your supplier.
Is dose management included?
The interface can send the report to a dose management system, but the dose management software itself is separate.
