CT motion SPICY is the enhanced version of the ulrich medical CT motion injector, with system pressure of up to 22.4 bar, 1-litre contrast containers and a choice of pedestal or ceiling mounting. It keeps the syringeless 24-hour working principle and adds functions for demanding CT work. This overview explains what is different, who needs it and how to choose between SPICY and the standard model.
What CT motion SPICY adds
CT motion SPICY keeps the syringeless roll-pump principle of CT motion: pump tubing set up once a day and used for 24 hours, with only the patient tubing replaced between examinations. On top of that it adds higher pressure, larger containers and several workflow functions.
A system pressure of up to 22.4 bar (325 psi) supports high flow rates and highly viscous contrast media, for example in cardiac and extremity examinations. 1-litre contrast containers make up to 4 litres of media available, which suits high patient throughput because containers need to be changed less often.
The two features that matter most in daily work are probably the pressure reserve and the container size. A higher pressure ceiling does not mean every injection runs at the limit; it means that when a protocol calls for a high flow rate through a narrow cannula or a thick contrast medium, the system has headroom before it reaches its limit. Larger containers mean fewer changes and fewer opportunities for handling errors during a long list.
CDadapt, media scan and display
The optional CDadapt function automatically reduces contrast density, for instance in cardiac scans, which lowers the volume of contrast used. Whether to use it and how is a clinical decision for the radiologist.
Media labels can be read by barcode scanner, and NaCl and contrast parameters can be sent to PACS or a dose management system with the RIS/PACS Interface. A traffic-light display shows the exact remaining volume in ml, so staff see at a glance when a container will need replacing. These functions are discussed in our PACS data article.
The remaining-volume display is useful for planning as well as safety: if the traffic-light indicator shows a container is nearly empty, staff can load the next one or let the automatic switchover to a second container of the same medium take over before the next patient is on the table.
- Optional CDadapt contrast density reduction
- Barcode Media Scan (included with the RIS/PACS Interface licence)
- Traffic-light display of remaining volume
- Dose report to PACS or dose management with the interface
CT motion vs CT motion SPICY
Both injectors have two contrast connections and one saline connection, 24-hour pump tubing and a pedestal unit measuring 645 × 645 × 1,445 mm and weighing 79 kg. The differences are in capability: CT motion works up to 17 bar with containers of up to 500 ml, while SPICY works up to 22.4 bar with up to 1,000 ml. SPICY also offers the barcode scan, traffic-light display, optional CDadapt and a ceiling-mounted version.
In practice, choose the standard model if your protocols stay within its pressure and you value a simpler configuration. Choose SPICY if you regularly run high flow rates, work with viscous media, have high throughput or need a ceiling-mounted unit in a small room. Check pressure limits in our pressure article.
A practical test when comparing the two models is to take your five most demanding protocols and write down the flow rate, the cannula gauge and the contrast agent for each. If all five sit comfortably within the limits of the standard model, the extra capability may not be needed.
Pedestal or ceiling mounting
SPICY is available as a wireless pedestal unit or as a ceiling-mounted version with 1–3 arms, positioned for small rooms. A ceiling installation clears the floor but needs structural review and careful planning of arm reach; see the mounting comparison.
Connection to the scanner is possible with the optional SYNCopen interface, which lets injector and scanner start together with one touch.
Where the ceiling version is considered, the building survey comes first: ask the installer to confirm the ceiling structure, the rail position and the arm clearance against the gantry and any ceiling-mounted lighting before an order is placed.

Frequently asked questions
What pressure does CT motion SPICY reach?
Up to 22.4 bar (325 psi), compared with 17 bar for CT motion.
What container sizes does SPICY use?
Contrast containers of up to 1,000 ml (two connections) and saline of up to 2,000 ml on the pedestal version.
Can SPICY be ceiling mounted?
Yes, there is a ceiling-mounted version with one to three arms, as well as a wireless pedestal version.
Is CDadapt standard?
No, CDadapt is an optional function that automatically reduces contrast density, for example in cardiac scans.
