A flexible digital ureteroscope carries a camera sensor at its tip, while a fiberoptic ureteroscope carries the image through a bundle of glass fibers to an eyepiece or external camera. The difference changes image quality, durability, handling and the rest of the tower. This guide compares the two designs on practical criteria, explains the main flexible ureteroscope parts and lists what to check when buying.
How the two designs work
In a digital, or chip-on-tip, ureteroscope a small sensor sits at the distal end and sends an electronic signal along the shaft to a camera controller. Nothing needs to be attached at the handle except the cable. In a fiberoptic scope, a coherent bundle of thousands of glass fibers carries the image to the proximal end, where an eyepiece or camera coupler captures it.
Both designs share the same mechanical principle for steering: a deflection mechanism in the handle pulls control wires to bend the tip, and a working channel runs the length of the shaft. The differences lie in the image path and in how the scope is connected to the tower.
Image quality and durability
Digital scopes generally give a clearer image without the honeycomb pattern that is typical of fiber bundles, and their image does not degrade as fibers break. Fiberoptic scopes lose pixels over time as individual fibers fracture, which appears as black dots in the picture. This is a general characteristic, and the actual quality of any model should be judged in a demonstration.
Durability is the key cost factor for both. Bending forces, laser fiber misfire and instruments forced through a deflected channel are leading causes of damage. Ask each supplier for typical repair causes and for the repair policy. Our reprocessing guide covers care.
Richard Wolf BOA and COBRA as digital examples
The Richard Wolf BOA and COBRA scopes are flexible sensor endoscopes: the sensor is in the scope and the signal goes to the ENDOCAM Logic 4K controller. All members of the family support Special Imaging Modes to help differentiate tissue, and both ureterorenoscopes have 270° deflection up and down.
BOA has an 8.7 Fr shaft and 6.6 Fr tip, and COBRA a 3.6 Fr working channel with a separate 2.4 Fr laser channel. These are digital 4K-capable scopes in the sense that they connect to a 4K controller, and the ENDOCAM Logic 4K provides 3840 × 2160 or 4096 × 2160 resolution with six SIM algorithms.
- Sensor in the scope, signal to the controller
- 270° deflection up and down (BOA, COBRA)
- Special Imaging Modes for tissue differentiation
- Connection to a 4K controller
System compatibility and parts
Flexible ureteroscope parts to ask about are the distal tip, the bending section, the insertion tube, the working channel, the handle and the cable or connector. Digital scopes need a compatible controller; fiberoptic scopes need a light source, a camera coupler or an eyepiece. Check the connector type and the software version of the controller before buying.
Mixing brands is rarely possible for digital scopes, so the controller decision becomes a platform decision. Compare the total tower and not only the scope. For prices see flexible ureteroscope price factors and for single-use options disposable and reusable scopes.
Questions to ask before choosing
Ask for a demonstration in your own room with your monitor and tower. Ask about repair turnaround in the UAE, loan units, the cost of repair per event and the expected life in cases. Ask which imaging features are included and which require licences. Registration requirements should be confirmed with MOHAP, DHA or DOH.

Frequently asked questions
What is a digital flexible ureteroscope?
A flexible ureteroscope with a camera sensor at the tip that sends the image electronically to a controller.
What is a fiberoptic ureteroscope?
A scope that carries the image through a bundle of glass fibers to an eyepiece or camera coupler.
Are digital scopes more durable?
Not necessarily. Both types can be damaged by bending, laser misfire and forced instruments. Compare repair policies.
Is a 4K ureteroscope available?
The Richard Wolf BOA and COBRA scopes connect to the ENDOCAM Logic 4K controller.
Can I use my existing camera?
Only if the scope and camera are compatible. Digital scopes usually require their own controller.
