DORO QR3 cranial stabilisation: which version fits your OR

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

The DORO QR3 is the everyday headrest platform from Black Forest Medical for neurosurgery without intraoperative imaging, built around a skull clamp, a swivel adaptor and an adjustable base unit. It comes in three variants: standard aluminium, a Teflon-coated autoclavable model and the XTom version for mobile CT. This guide explains how they differ and how to choose between them.

What the DORO QR3 headrest system consists of

The DORO QR3 Cranial Stabilization System has three working parts: the QR3 skull clamp, a swivel adaptor and an adjustable base unit that attaches to the OR table. The clamp is designed to fit every head size, and its extra height leaves room for the anaesthesia team to intubate, even when the patient is prone.

The system supports supine, prone, lateral and sitting positions, so one platform can serve most of a neurosurgical list. Through the Mix & Match principle it can be combined with DORO radiolucent components when a case needs imaging, which protects the investment if your case mix changes. DORO Quick-Rail and navigation interfaces

The DORO Quick-Rail is the feature that gives the family its name. Retractor arms and other accessories clip directly onto the rail, even without breaking the sterile barrier, so the team can add or move a retractor during the case without rebuilding the set-up.

Stainless steel starburst interfaces sit on both sides of the clamp, close to the surgical field, and take navigation tracking adaptors. Placing the reference near the operative site is useful for frameless navigation because it keeps the array within the camera line of sight. For retractors that mount on the rail, read our comparison of DORO LUNA, COBRA and Halo.

  • Quick-Rail for retractors and accessories
  • Starburst navigation interfaces on both sides of the clamp
  • Positions: supine, prone, lateral and sitting
  • Fits every head size, extra height for intubation

QR3 Teflon: the autoclavable version

The DORO QR3 Teflon keeps the same concept but has a Teflon-coated surface. According to the manufacturer the coating allows the system to be machine-washed and autoclaved, which matters for CSSD departments that want to reprocess the clamp rather than wipe it down.

Choose the Teflon version when your sterile processing workflow is built around washer-disinfectors and steam sterilisation, or when infection-control policy prefers terminal sterilisation of head fixation hardware. Always follow the instructions for use for cycle parameters; our note on cleaning and sterilising skull clamps covers the practical points.

QR3 XTom for intraoperative CT

The DORO QR3 XTom is the QR3 platform adapted to small-gantry mobile CT scanners. Adjustable extension arms position the head within gantries of 32 cm (12 in) and larger, and the system is intended for use with DORO LUCENT disposable skull pins to support good image quality.

It ships with a dedicated torque screwdriver for setting pin pressure and the DORO XTom U-Belt, a safety strap that acts as a net if the head slips. DORO LUNA, DORO COBRA and Quick-Clamp products still mount on the Quick-Rail. If you plan imaging in the OR, compare the options in our intraoperative CT headrest guide.

Choosing between QR3, QR3 Teflon and QR3 XTom

Start from the imaging plan. If cases are performed without intraoperative imaging, the standard QR3 or the QR3 Teflon is the natural fit. If a mobile small-gantry CT is in or planned for the theatre, the XTom is the one built for it. Then decide on reprocessing: the Teflon coating is the deciding factor for machine washing and autoclaving.

Ask your supplier about the table interface, available pin sets, spare parts, user training and how the unit will be serviced locally. Confirm that the device is registered for your emirate and facility type with the relevant authorities, as requirements change. Beckfinity can help match the configuration to your OR table and case mix; contact our specialists for a quote or product demonstration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DORO QR3 and QR3 Teflon?

Both use the same clamp, swivel adaptor and base unit with Quick-Rail. The Teflon version has a coated surface that, per the manufacturer, allows machine washing and autoclaving.

Can the DORO QR3 be used for prone cases?

Yes. The system supports supine, prone, lateral and sitting positions, and its extra height leaves room for intubation, even in the prone position.

What is the DORO QR3 XTom designed for?

It is designed for mobile small-gantry intraoperative CT. Adjustable extension arms fit gantries of 32 cm (12 in) and larger, and it includes a torque screwdriver and a U-Belt safety strap.

Can I mount retractors on the DORO headrest?

Yes. DORO LUNA, COBRA and Quick-Clamp products attach to the Quick-Rail, and navigation adaptors mount on the starburst interfaces.
