A laparoscopy tower for gynecology has to serve two very different procedures in the same room: laparoscopy with large 10 mm optics and high light demand, and hysteroscopy with narrow optics and a fluid pump. This guide explains how to choose the camera, the light source, telescopes, insufflator and pump, how 4K compares with HD, and what to confirm before you order.
What a shared gynecology tower contains
The standard tower holds a monitor, camera controller, light source, insufflator, irrigation and suction pump, an electrosurgical generator and recording or integration equipment. Because gynecology mixes laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, plan connectors, cable lengths and cart position so that the team can switch within minutes.
Our guides to the operative hysteroscopy equipment and laparoscopic hysterectomy instruments list the instruments that connect to the tower.
Think about ergonomics as well: monitor height and angle for the primary surgeon and assistant, a second monitor for the scrub team, and boom or cart mounting that does not obstruct the patient position. A tower that is awkward to move will not be shared between rooms in practice.
Camera system: 4K versus HD
4K gives a larger, sharper image, which helps with fine dissection and tissue differentiation, but only if the whole chain supports it: sensor, controller, telescope, cable and monitor. The Richard Wolf ENDOCAM Logic 4K is a 4K platform with native 4K output, Special Imaging Modes switched from the camera head, clinical presets, USB storage of images and video and an autoclavable camera head with replaceable cable.
Full HD remains a sound choice for many departments. The ENDOCAM Logic HD adds a dialog function in which the camera automatically controls the LED light source, a large set of clinically tested application profiles, a pendulum PENDUAL camera head convertible to a straight head and Full HD video recording to USB. The 4K controller accepts Logic HD camera heads and application parts, which can protect an existing investment.
Telescopes and light
The telescope sets the image quality ceiling. The PANOVIEW ULTRA laparoscopic telescopes are optimised for Ultra HD and 4K, use ED glass lenses and lead- and arsenic-free fibre optics, show low colour shift and use the same light cable as 10 mm telescopes.
Richard Wolf states hardly any transmission loss after 500 autoclave cycles. For hysteroscopy you need separate, narrower telescopes, so list both families in the quotation and verify the light-cable adapters.
Insufflator, pump and energy
For hysteroscopy, a pump with fluid-deficit monitoring such as the Richard Wolf FLUID CONTROL 2225 is a safety item; read about hysteroscopy fluid management. A laparoscopic insufflator with adequate flow and smoke evacuation compatibility should also be specified.
Electrosurgery is covered in our article on vessel sealing in laparoscopic hysterectomy. Make sure the tower has enough sockets, an equipotential connection and cable management.
Decision checklist
Define your procedure mix, room size and monitor placement, then ask for a full-chain demonstration with the same telescopes you will buy. Confirm integration options, upgrade paths from HD to 4K, warranty and loan equipment, plus current UAE registration. Ask also what training the supplier provides for nurses who set up the tower, since setup errors cause most delays at the start of a list, and request a written setup checklist for each procedure.
Beckfinity specialists can propose a tower configuration; please request a quote or consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need 4K for gynecology?
Not necessarily. 4K gives more detail, but a well-matched Full HD system is adequate for many departments. Evaluate the full chain.
Can one tower serve laparoscopy and hysteroscopy?
Yes, with suitable telescopes, light cables and a hysteroscopy pump. Plan connectors and cart layout for quick changeover.
Does the ENDOCAM Logic 4K accept HD camera heads?
According to Richard Wolf, it accepts ENDOCAM Logic HD camera heads and application parts.
How many autoclave cycles do PANOVIEW ULTRA telescopes tolerate?
Richard Wolf states hardly any transmission loss after 500 autoclave cycles. Follow the instructions for use.
