Hospital Radiology Equipment List and How to Phase the Purchase

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

A hospital radiology equipment list should start from the clinical services you plan to offer, not from a catalogue. This guide walks through the modalities a general hospital radiology department usually needs, from digital radiography rooms and fluoroscopy to mobile X-ray, C-arms, mammography and contrast injectors, and explains how to scope, phase and specify the purchase so that rooms, power and service are ready when equipment arrives.

Core rooms in a radiology department

Most departments are built around three kinds of X-ray room. A digital radiography (DR) room handles chest, skeleton and general work and carries the highest throughput. A remote-controlled radiography/fluoroscopy (R/F) room covers contrast studies and dynamic examinations. Mobile X-ray units serve wards, ICU and emergency where the patient cannot travel.

Typical imaging also includes ultrasound, CT, MRI and mammography. CT and MRI usually follow a separate, larger planning track, while DR and R/F rooms are the practical first phase for a new facility. Our hospital equipment list shows how radiology fits into the wider scope.

Digital radiography rooms

A modular DR room combines a generator, tube support, table, chest stand and detectors under one acquisition software. For example, the Villa Moviplan iC DR uses fixed and wireless flat-panel detectors in table and chest stand, VDX Next acquisition software with DICOM integration, auto-tracking and stitching, and a floor-mounted column or a five-axis motorised ceiling tubestand.

When specifying a DR room compare detector types and sizes, wireless options, software features such as stitching, DICOM modality worklist and dose reporting, tube support (floor or ceiling) and the room area each layout needs.

  • Detector: fixed, wireless, size and number
  • Tube support: floor column or ceiling tubestand
  • Software: DICOM, worklist, stitching, image processing
  • Chest stand and table: motorised, tilting, patient weight limit

Fluoroscopy and R/F rooms

A digital R/F table combines radiography and fluoroscopy in one room. The Villa Apollo DRF, for instance, has a 43 x 43 cm dynamic flat-panel detector, continuous and pulsed fluoroscopy, plus or minus 90 degrees of table tilt and plus or minus 40 degrees of column tilt, a focus-detector distance of up to 180 cm, and optional DSA, stitching and tomosynthesis.

Check table load, tilt range, access for stretcher transfer, dose-saving tools and whether the room will also be used for paediatric work, where automatic grid removal helps. Decide early whether interventional work is planned, because it changes the table, the generator and the shielding.

C-arms, mobile X-ray and contrast injection

C-arms are used in the operating room and interventional suites. A flat-panel model such as the Perlove PLX C7100 offers a 12-inch dynamic detector, generator output up to 25 kW, DSA subtraction imaging and an injector interface, and as a mobile unit needs no rails or ceiling mounts. Mobile DR for wards and ICU completes the picture.

For CT and angiography you also need a contrast media injector. The syringeless Ulrich CT motion has three media connection points and maximum system pressure of 17 bar. Mammography is a dedicated room with its own regulatory and quality-assurance requirements, so plan it as a distinct item.

Scoping and phasing the purchase

Rank the departments by clinical need and room readiness. A common sequence is DR rooms and ultrasound first, then fluoroscopy and C-arms, then mammography, CT and MRI as the service grows. Treat PACS, RIS and network capacity as part of the same project, not a later add-on.

Prepare a room data sheet for each room covering floor load, power, shielding, cooling and cabling; our guide to medical equipment planning and room data sheets explains the format. Confirm radiation licensing and shielding approval requirements with the relevant UAE authority, as these change over time.

Common mistakes include buying equipment before the room is designed, ignoring detector replacement cost and service, and not budgeting for acceptance tests and operator training.

Frequently asked questions

What is in a typical hospital radiology equipment list?

DR rooms, an R/F or fluoroscopy room, mobile X-ray units, C-arms for the OR, ultrasound, mammography, CT, MRI and contrast injectors, together with PACS and RIS.

Which rooms should a new hospital buy first?

Usually digital radiography and ultrasound, then fluoroscopy and C-arms, followed by CT, MRI and mammography based on service plans.

Do DR and R/F rooms need shielding?

Yes. Shielding design and authority approval are needed for X-ray rooms; confirm the current UAE requirements with the competent body.

What should be in an X-ray department equipment list for suppliers?

Room-by-room configuration, detector type, tube support, software, accessories, installation, training, warranty and service terms.

Where do I find radiology equipment suppliers in the UAE?

Look for manufacturer-authorised distributors with installation and service teams, and ask for registration status and named engineers.
