Medical equipment trading companies in UAE, authorised distributors and local agents can all appear on the same shortlist, yet they carry different obligations for registration, warranty and service. This article explains the three models, what a medical equipment trading licence does and does not prove, and how a hospital buyer should decide who to contract with.
Medical equipment trading companies in UAE: three models
A trading company buys and resells medical products, often from several sources, and usually holds a trade licence with a medical-equipment activity. It may stock fast-moving items, but it does not necessarily have any link with the manufacturer. A medical equipment distributor in the UAE holds a written authorisation from the manufacturer to sell, import and support specified products in a defined territory.
A local agent acts for a manufacturer, usually with a narrower role: promoting products, taking orders or handling registration, while the manufacturer or another party may supply. Contracts differ widely, so the label on a business card is less important than the paperwork behind it.
Licences: what each one proves
A trade licence from the economic development authority of an emirate confirms that a company may trade in a stated activity. It does not by itself confirm that the products are registered or that the company can service them. Medical devices must be registered with the relevant authority, MOHAP at federal level, while facility licensing is handled by bodies such as the Dubai Health Authority and the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.
Rules on who may register a device, and in which name, vary by product class and change over time. Ask the supplier to show the licences and registration status for each product, and confirm requirements with the authority. For a general introduction see medical device registration in the UAE.
Warranty, service and spare parts
This is where the models diverge most. An authorised distributor can offer manufacturer-backed warranty, trained engineers, original parts and updates. A trading company reselling a product it did not import officially may offer only its own warranty, and may lose access to parts if its source changes. Ask directly: who is the warranty provider, who stocks parts, and who trains the engineers?
Equipment such as OR tables, lights, pendants and electrosurgical units needs installation and periodic checks, so service capacity matters as much as the sale; see Beckfinity's installation and maintenance pages for the kind of detail to request.
- Authorised distributor: manufacturer-backed warranty and service training.
- Trading company: variable; may depend on third-party sources.
- Local agent: depends on the agreement; confirm who supports the product.
Which should a hospital buyer contract with?
For capital equipment, prefer the authorised distributor, or the manufacturer's own subsidiary where one exists, as long as you can verify the authorisation. For small consumables a reliable trading company may be adequate if the products are registered and traceable. For mixed projects, such as an operating theatre fit-out, a distributor with several manufacturers can reduce the number of contracts.
Whatever the model, insist on named product models, written warranty terms, delivery and installation scope, and documented training. Our guide to choosing a medical equipment supplier in the UAE provides a wider checklist, and the operating theatre equipment checklist helps verify the scope of an OR order.
How to verify claims quickly
Ask for the manufacturer's authorisation letter and check its date, scope and territory. Ask the manufacturer or its regional office to confirm the distributor. Check licences on the issuing authority's public channels where available. A pattern of vague answers is itself a finding.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a trading company and a distributor?
A trading company resells products from various sources. A distributor holds a manufacturer's authorisation to import, sell and support products in a territory.
Does a medical equipment trading licence mean the products are registered?
No. A trade licence permits the activity; devices are registered separately with the relevant authority.
Who gives the warranty on equipment from a distributor?
Usually the manufacturer through the authorised distributor. Ask for the terms in writing.
Is a local agent the same as a distributor?
Not necessarily. An agent may only represent the manufacturer, so verify who imports, registers and services the product.
