Hybrid Emergency Room System: Concept, Layout and Equipment

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

A hybrid emergency room system places imaging, resuscitation and surgical capability in a single space so that a severely injured patient can be assessed, stabilised and treated without being moved between rooms. This article explains the concept, the typical equipment, the role of ceiling pendants and suspension arms, and the planning questions that trauma centre leaders and architects should settle before committing to a design.

What a hybrid emergency room is

The idea behind a hybrid ER, also called a hybrid emergency room or trauma hybrid room, is to bring a CT scanner, an angiography system and a resuscitation or operating table into one bay. The patient stays on a single table while diagnostic imaging, bleeding control and emergency procedures are carried out in sequence.

The concept grew out of trauma centres that wanted to shorten the time between arrival, diagnosis and intervention. Whether it suits a particular hospital depends on trauma volume, staffing and the building, and we do not quote clinical outcome figures here.

Core equipment and layout

A typical set-up includes a radiolucent table compatible with the imaging system, a CT scanner on rails or a fixed gantry, a C-arm or angiography unit, anaesthesia and resuscitation equipment, suction, warming and monitoring, and surgical lighting. Space must allow a full trauma team to work around the patient with clear access to the head, chest and limbs.

Layout decisions begin with the imaging motion paths. Mark them on the plan, then place ceiling services, lights, monitors and pendants outside those paths or on parking positions. Our overview of hybrid operating room requirements covers the structural and services points that apply to hybrid spaces in general.

Ceiling pendants, lights and monitors

In a resuscitation bay, gases, suction, power and data must be available at the head of the patient immediately, and the team needs displays for imaging, vital signs and procedure video. Pendants and suspension arms deliver these services without floor clutter. Lojer Solido pendants can be configured as surgical or anaesthesia pendants for operating rooms, with a brake system and a slim, easy-to-clean profile, and are built to order.

For lights and displays, SIMEON Sim.FLEX suspension systems take up to four arms on one axis, with arms up to 2,000 mm for hybrid ORs, and further arms can be added after installation. Confirm with the manufacturer that the chosen configuration fits the imaging envelope.

Workflow and staffing

The hybrid ER works only if the team can move quickly from resuscitation to imaging to surgery. Define roles for emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, anaesthetists, radiographers, nurses and blood bank liaison, and rehearse the transitions. The room should also be able to revert to a standard resuscitation bay when no imaging is needed.

Infection control and radiation protection need particular attention in an emergency area, where traffic is heavier and patients arrive unprepared. Involve infection-control and radiation protection staff in the design, and confirm requirements with the relevant UAE authority through your consultant.

Questions before committing

Compare the investment against your trauma caseload and referral pattern, and consider phased delivery. The following questions help structure the discussion.

  • How many severe trauma patients does the centre receive, and from where?
  • Is there a 24-hour imaging, surgical and anaesthesia team?
  • Can the building take the structure, shielding and services next to the emergency department?
  • How will the room be used when there is no trauma case?
  • What service and training support is available locally?

Frequently asked questions

What is a hybrid emergency room?

An emergency bay equipped with imaging such as CT and angiography, a resuscitation or operating table and surgical capability, so that a trauma patient can be treated in one room.

Is a hybrid ER the same as a hybrid operating room?

They are related. A hybrid OR is a theatre with fixed imaging, while a hybrid ER places imaging and surgical capability in the emergency resuscitation area.

Does a hybrid ER need ceiling pendants?

Usually yes, because gases, suction, power and displays must be available at the head of the patient without floor clutter.

Is a hybrid ER right for every hospital?

No. It suits centres with sufficient severe trauma volume and the staffing to run it.
