What is a hybrid operating room and how does it differ from a standard OR?

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

A hybrid operating room is a surgical theatre equipped with advanced fixed imaging, such as an angiography system or a ceiling-mounted C-arm, so that surgery and image-guided procedures can happen in the same room during the same session. This article explains the definition, how it differs from a standard OR and a catheterisation lab, who uses it and what equipment decisions follow.

Hybrid operating room definition

The hybrid operating room definition combines two things: the sterile environment, air handling and surgical equipment of an operating theatre, and the high-end imaging of an interventional suite. The result lets a team perform open surgery and endovascular or image-guided steps without moving the patient between rooms.

People also search for what a hybrid room means, a hybrid operating theatre or a hybrid room definition; they all refer to this combination. Imaging quality is the key feature, because fixed imaging with a table that tolerates surgery is what separates a hybrid room from a standard OR with a mobile C-arm.

How it differs from a standard OR and a cath lab

A standard OR uses mobile imaging brought in when needed. A catheterisation or angiography lab is built for interventional procedures and normally has lower air-quality and sterile-field standards than a theatre. A hybrid room aims to meet surgical requirements for air, space and sterility while carrying permanent imaging.

This is why hybrid rooms are larger, have more ceiling-mounted equipment and need careful coordination between imaging, structure, ventilation and surgical equipment. For a fuller comparison see hybrid OR versus conventional OR.

Staff workflow differs too. Anaesthesia, perfusion and imaging technologists all need positions near the patient, so access routes and cable management deserve careful attention.

Which specialties use hybrid ORs

Common users are vascular surgery, cardiac and cardiothoracic teams, neurosurgery and neurovascular teams, spine and trauma surgery, and some oncology and urology work. What they share is a need for imaging during surgery, either to guide a device or to confirm a result.

The procedures themselves are described in our article on hybrid OR surgery applications. Whether a hospital needs a hybrid room depends on case volume and mix, and the clinical decision belongs to the medical team.

Equipment in a hybrid operating room

Beyond the imaging system, a hybrid room needs a surgical table compatible with imaging, radiation protection for staff, surgical lighting with enough reach and good depth illumination, pendants for gases and power, display walls or arms for imaging and OR video, and possibly integration. Sim.FLEX suspension arms of up to 2,000 mm, described as suitable for hybrid ORs, are one option for lights and monitors (Sim.FLEX).

Ceiling services are usually carried by pendants. Lojer Solido pendants are built to order, can be configured as surgical or anaesthesia pendants and offer a slim profile that eases disinfection (Solido pendants). Plan their positions around the imaging arc, as discussed in our guide to hybrid operating room lights.

  • Fixed imaging system and compatible table
  • Radiation shielding for staff
  • Surgical lights and suspension arms with clear reach
  • Ceiling pendants for gases, power and data
  • Monitors and video routing
  • Ventilation and room size that meet surgical standards

Planning considerations

Start with the clinical case mix and involve the imaging vendor, structural engineer, HVAC designer and infection control team from the first meeting. Hybrid rooms have large floor loads and complex ceilings, so structure and services need early coordination.

Follow the standards your project specifies, and confirm licensing and device-registration requirements with the relevant UAE authorities. Budget is addressed in our note on hybrid operating room cost.

A common mistake is to treat the hybrid room as an imaging project with surgery added on. The opposite order works better: define the surgical workflow, where the team stands and where the lights and pendants must reach, and then fit the imaging into that workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hybrid operating room?

A surgical theatre with permanently installed advanced imaging, allowing surgery and image-guided procedures in the same room.

Is a hybrid room the same as a cath lab?

No. A cath lab is built for interventional procedures; a hybrid room also meets surgical theatre requirements for air, sterility and space.

Which specialties use hybrid ORs?

Vascular, cardiac, neurosurgical, spine and trauma teams are common users, among others.

Do hybrid ORs need special lights?

They need lights and suspensions that reach around the imaging equipment, such as long-arm systems.
