A laparoscopy equipment list has two halves: the tower that creates the picture and the long, slim instruments that work through trocars. This article names the core laparoscopic instruments, describes what each does, explains the parts of a modular instrument and shows how to compile a list for a new theatre or a replacement purchase in the UAE.
The instrument families
Laparoscopic hand instruments are designed with a long shaft, a working tip at one end and a handle at the other, and pass through trocar sleeves of 3, 5 or 10 mm. They fall into recognisable families, each with its own role during surgery.
Graspers hold or retract tissue and can be atraumatic or toothed. Dissectors, often curved, separate tissue planes. Scissors cut, typically with straight, curved or hook blades. Needle holders let the surgeon suture inside the abdomen. Clip appliers close vessels and ducts, and retractors move organs out of the way.

Parts of a modular instrument
Modern reusable instruments are modular so that they can be cleaned and repaired more easily. REDA's laparoscopy range uses modular 5 and 10 mm hand instruments in which the working insert and the sleeve are joined by a CLICK snap-action coupling. The handles are ergonomic carbon units with a ratchet, a 360 degree rotating head and an HF connector, and they serve 3, 5 and 10 mm shafts.
The range also covers forceps, scissors, needle holders, HF and suction-irrigation instruments, cholangiography instruments, pediatric, thoracic and gynaecological sets and light cables. Ask the supplier for a full parts diagram with part numbers so that you can replace single components instead of an entire instrument.
Trocars and access
Trocar systems create the ports. REDA lists trocar sleeves with diameters from 3.5 mm for pediatric use up to 20 mm, together with safety trocars with automatic locking and reducers. The sleeve size must match the instrument shaft and the laparoscope; a mismatch causes gas leaks and hinders instrument movement.
For a deeper look, read our article on laparoscopic trocar types. Plan multiple sizes for each tray and allow for disposable and reusable options based on your reprocessing capacity.
From instruments to a complete equipment list
A complete laparoscopy equipment list adds the laparoscope and its parts (eyepiece, light post, shaft and distal window), a camera head and controller, a light source and cable, an insufflator, a suction-irrigation system, an energy generator, a monitor and a tower. The article on what a laparoscope is describes the telescope in detail, and our laparoscopy equipment overview shows how the elements come together.
For a procedure-specific instrument list, see the set for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The count of each item depends on your caseload and reprocessing turnaround.
How to specify and order
When you compile an order, list each instrument by name, shaft diameter, working length, tip type, handle type, whether it has a rotating head or HF connector, and whether it is reusable or single-use. Request sample instruments for the surgeons to test for feel and function, and ask about warranty and repair of jaws and insulation.
Check registration and compliance status with the relevant UAE authority, and confirm that the supplier can provide training and spare parts. Beckfinity can prepare a quotation for a complete set; contact our specialists via the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main laparoscopic instruments?
Graspers, dissectors, scissors, needle holders, clip appliers, retractors, suction-irrigation and HF instruments, used through trocars.
What is a modular laparoscopic instrument?
An instrument in which the handle, shaft and working tip can be separated for cleaning and replacement. REDA's range uses a CLICK snap-action coupling.
What trocar sizes exist?
REDA lists trocar sleeves from 3.5 mm to 20 mm. Choose by the instruments and laparoscope used.
Are laparoscopic instruments reusable?
Many are reusable and need validated reprocessing; others are single-use. Check each product's instructions.
