Choosing a Laparoscopic Tower: Configuration Guide for Surgical Teams

Updated 14 October 2026 · 3 min read

A laparoscopic tower brings the camera, light, insufflator, monitor and recording into one mobile unit that stands beside the operating table. Configured well, it is quiet, quick to set up and easy to upgrade; configured badly, it becomes a tangle of cables and compromises. This guide walks surgical teams and procurement staff through the decisions for a general surgery tower.

Core modules of a laparoscopy tower

A typical laparoscopy tower system includes a camera controller with a sterile camera head, a light source and cable, a CO2 insufflator, one or two medical monitors, and a recording or documentation device. Some configurations add an irrigation pump, an electrosurgical generator and a smoke evacuator. Laparoscopy towers are normally built on a mobile cart, a ceiling-mounted boom or both.

Telescopes and hand instruments are not part of the tower itself but must match it. The sections below follow the signal path from the patient to the screen.

Camera, telescopes and image quality

Select the camera class first. Richard Wolf's ENDOCAM Logic 4K provides native 4K output and six Special Imaging Modes, switched from the camera head, and can store images and video to USB. It accepts ENDOCAM Logic HD application parts, which can be useful if you upgrade in stages.

The telescope sets the ceiling for image quality. PANOVIEW ULTRA telescopes use ED glass lenses and low colour shift for natural white-light appearance, and they work with the same light cable as 10 mm telescopes. Match diameter and viewing angle to the procedures: 10 mm and 5 mm sizes, with 0 degree and 30 degree views, cover most general surgery.

Light, insufflation and fluid handling

The light source must deliver stable output to the cable end and, ideally, cooperate with the camera. Read the endoscope light source guide for specifications to compare. The insufflator should provide stable pressure with adequate flow for the cases you do; see CO2 insufflators explained.

If your service includes gynaecology or urology cases, plan irrigation and suction. The FLUID CONTROL 2225 pump covers gynaecology, urology and general surgery and displays fluid deficit continuously with an optional balancing module.

Monitors, documentation and ergonomics

Choose a medical-grade monitor with the same or higher resolution than the camera, and size it for the viewing distance from the surgeon's position. Two monitors help when both the surgeon and the assistant need a good view. Ceiling booms free floor space but need structural planning in the theatre.

Plan documentation early: image and video capture, patient data, and export to your hospital system. Cable management, brakes on the cart, and clear labelling of connectors also matter on a busy list, because they decide how fast a tower is ready for the first case.

Upgrade path, service and quotes

Ask what can be upgraded without replacing the tower: camera heads, software, monitors. Confirm warranty per module, loaner policy, service response and training. Request a quote that lists every module, accessory and spare cable, and compare it with other offers using the points in endoscopy tower price factors.

For what each module does in more detail see endoscopy tower components. If you are building a complete laparoscopy service, the equipment planning article covers licensing and budgeting.

Frequently asked questions

What does a laparoscopic tower include?

Usually a camera controller and head, light source, insufflator, medical monitors, recording and a cart or boom, with optional irrigation pump and electrosurgical generator.

Do I need one tower per operating room?

Ideally yes for busy theatres. Sharing a tower between rooms saves capital but adds scheduling and reprocessing pressure.

Should I buy 4K now or start with HD?

Decide by caseload, surgeon preference and budget. Check whether the platform you choose lets you upgrade later.

Which laparoscopy tower brands exist?

Many manufacturers make them. Compare on image chain, compatibility with your telescopes, service in the UAE and warranty.

How long does tower installation take?

It depends on room and integration. Ask the supplier for an installation plan with site requirements and a training schedule.
