Good mammography room design starts with the unit's site-planning drawing and ends with an approved radiation shielding plan. Mammography rooms are smaller and use lower beam energies than general radiography rooms, but they have specific needs: patient privacy and comfort, a protected operator position, stable power and a controlled environment for the detector. This guide covers the main planning points for a new suite.
Mammography room size and layout
The room must hold the gantry with its motorised C-arm, the operator position, a changing area or booth, storage and, if biopsy is planned, space for a procedure trolley and assistants. Mammography room size is therefore driven by the largest planned function, not the basic examination.
Always take dimensions from the manufacturer's site-planning drawing for the exact model and configuration, because a unit with tomosynthesis, biopsy or a workstation inside the room needs more space. For the Villa Melody IIID and the Melody IIID TS, ask Beckfinity for the current drawing before the architect fixes the plan.
Mammography suite layout: patient flow and privacy
A mammography suite layout should keep patients out of public corridors while undressed. Use a changing cubicle adjacent to the room, a gown-secure route and a waiting area for gowned patients. Women's health centres often separate screening and diagnostic flow, with a shared reporting area.
Plan door positions, so that the door is not opposite the patient position, and consider an access-controlled entry. If you plan stereotactic biopsy, add a clean/dirty workflow, a sink and storage for sterile supplies and sharps disposal.
Mammography room shielding
Mammography uses low-energy X-rays, so the shielding needed is generally much lower than in general radiography. Still, a radiation protection expert must calculate it for each wall, floor, ceiling, door and window, taking into account workload, occupancy of adjacent areas, use factors and the expected unit position. Do not copy values from another project.
Practical points include shielding at the operator position or a protective screen with a viewing window, secure door interlocks or warning lights if required, and attention to penetrations such as cable ducts. The final plan and the shielding report are typically part of what the authorities review.
- Radiation protection calculation by a qualified expert
- Operator booth or screen with viewing window
- Warning light or door indicator where required
- Check penetrations and joints
Power, HVAC and equipment environment
Confirm the electrical requirements of the unit in the manufacturer's installation documents, including supply, protective earth and any dedicated circuit, and provide UPS protection for the workstation if you want graceful shutdown. Network points are needed for the acquisition station, PACS and printers.
Control temperature and humidity because detectors and electronics have stated operating ranges, and patients need a comfortable environment. Plan floor load and cable routes in advance; our article on mammography machine maintenance explains why service access around the gantry matters.
How room plans and licences are handled in the UAE
Radiation facilities in the UAE are regulated by FANR, and health authorities such as MOHAP, DHA and DOH license facilities and medical devices. Typically, a room plan and shielding assessment are reviewed before use and an acceptance test is performed before the first patient. Requirements change, so confirm the current process with each authority and your radiation safety officer. See our article on licensing a mammography unit in the UAE.

Frequently asked questions
How large should a mammography room be?
Use the manufacturer's site-planning drawing for your exact model, including any biopsy, tomosynthesis or workstation needs.
Does a mammography room need lead shielding?
Shielding is generally lower than for general radiography but must be calculated by a qualified radiation protection expert for each room.
Who approves the room plan in the UAE?
FANR regulates radiation facilities and health authorities such as MOHAP, DHA and DOH license facilities. Confirm the current process with them.
What services should be planned?
Electrical supply, earthing, network points, HVAC with temperature and humidity control and UPS for the workstation.
