How German equipment names are built

German forms technical nouns by joining words, so long names are usually simple once split. Absaugung (suction) is built from absaugen, to suction off; Operationssaal is operation plus hall, shortened to OP-Saal. Many names start with OP- for operating theatre, and abbreviations such as HF (Hochfrequenz, high frequency) or EKG (electrocardiogram) appear in catalogues without explanation.

The gender and plural endings (der, die, das; -e, -en) do not matter for searching a catalogue, but the base noun does. Searching for Leuchte will find Leuchten, Operationsleuchte and OP-Leuchte alike. Keep this in mind when you feed German terms into a procurement database or a translation tool.

Documents and service words you will meet

Manuals and certificates have their own vocabulary. Gebrauchsanweisung and Betriebsanleitung mean instructions for use or operating manual; Wartung is maintenance and Instandhaltung is upkeep in the wider sense; Prüfprotokoll is a test record and Konformitätserklärung is a declaration of conformity. Technische Daten means technical data, and Lieferumfang is the scope of supply, which is where accessories are listed.

Check the Lieferumfang line by line against the quotation. A frequent cause of disputes is an accessory that the English brochure shows and the German scope of supply lists as optional, marked as Option or auf Anfrage. Ask the supplier for English versions of the instructions for use and service documentation, and keep the German original as the reference for any disagreement.
