Morcellation Bag Workflow: BOWA MetraBag pro in TLH and Myomectomy

Updated 14 October 2026 · 3 min read

A morcellation bag is a sterile containment pouch placed inside the abdomen so that a specimen can be cut up and removed without exposing surrounding tissue. BOWA's MetraBag pro is one such system for laparoscopic hysterectomy and myomectomy. This overview explains how the bag works, where it fits in the procedure, how to prepare the theatre and what to check before adding it to your formulary.

What a morcellation bag is for

Contained, in-bag morcellation places the specimen in a closed bag, delivers the bag opening to the abdominal wall, and morcellates within it. The aim is to confine fragments and fluid so that they are not scattered in the peritoneal cavity. It is part of the wider safety conversation about uncontained morcellation, summarised in our article on power morcellation safety guidance.

The bag is a tool, not a substitute for patient selection and surgical judgement. Your clinical governance team should define when contained techniques are required and how staff are trained.

Typical points for a local policy include which cases qualify for contained morcellation, who checks bag integrity at the end of the procedure, and how the use of the bag is recorded in the theatre notes.

MetraBag pro: key characteristics

The MetraBag pro enables tissue morcellation inside an enclosed bag during laparoscopic hysterectomy and myomectomy and is intended to reduce the risk of abnormal cell dissemination. It is delivered sterile and is inserted through a 10 mm trocar.

The 3.5-litre volume accommodates large specimens, the transparent material keeps surrounding structures visible, and three colour-coded ports can be closed during and after morcellation. CO2 insufflation of the bag creates working space inside it.

  • Sterile, single-use presentation
  • Insertion through a 10 mm trocar
  • 3.5-litre volume
  • Transparent wall for visibility
  • Three colour-coded, closable ports
  • CO2 insufflation of the bag

How it fits a TLH or myomectomy workflow

In practice the surgeon introduces the folded bag through the trocar, positions it, places the specimen inside, exteriorises the bag opening through the port site and insufflates the bag. A camera and the morcellator are then introduced through the bag ports and the specimen is reduced and removed under vision, with the bag kept free of tears.

Time in theatre is affected by bag placement and specimen loading, so teams normally rehearse the sequence on a simulator or in a training session before first clinical use, with a clear role for the assistant who maintains the camera view while the bag is opened and positioned. Choosing the morcellator to use with the bag

Not every morcellator is designed for the same bag, so check the combination. BOWA lists the ERGO 300 morcellator as compatible with MetraBag pro: a reusable system with 12 and 15 mm working diameters, 50 to 1000 rpm speed control and blade deactivation for safe insertion.

Ask the supplier for written confirmation of compatibility for any other morcellator, because the shaft diameter, length and the sealing at the bag port have to match. Also compare alternatives in our retrieval bag brands comparison.

What to ask before purchasing

Confirm shelf life, sterile packaging, minimum order quantities, theatre storage and what training the supplier provides. Ask for the instructions for use and plan staff education before the first case.
