Operating Room Equipment List: A Fit-Out Checklist for New Theatres

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

A complete list of operating room equipment is the starting point for budgeting, tendering and commissioning a new theatre. Hospital planners often ask what equipment is used in the operating room beyond the table and light, and they need a checklist they can turn into a tender document. This guide groups the equipment by function and shows what to confirm for each item.

Core theatre furniture and positioning

The operating table is the centre of the room. Choose it for the case mix, with attention to load rating, C-arm access and accessories; the Smarter Practico is an electric example. Around the table you will normally need a Mayo stand, a back table, an anaesthesia trolley, kick buckets, step stools, IV poles and a surgeon's chair or stool.

The Lojer electric Mayo table adjusts height hands-free with a foot control, and the Lojer Anaesthetic trolley 650 offers six drawers, one lockable, and a side rail. See our guides to the Mayo stand and the anaesthesia trolley.

Lighting, pendants and ceiling services

Surgical lights provide shadow-free illumination of the operative field. The Lojer Q-Flow LED family comes in Fluent, Vision and Intelligent versions with 700 mm or 560 mm light heads, a turbulence intensity of 15.9 percent for 700 mm heads, colour rendering of Ra 98 and dimming from 10 to 100 percent. Surgical lights are covered by IEC 60601-2-41.

Ceiling pendants supply medical gases, electricity and data at the point of use and hold monitors or equipment. Medical gas pipeline systems follow ISO 7396-1 or the national standard your hospital adopts, so specify them with the room. Our operating room category lists the options.

Anaesthesia and monitoring equipment

The anaesthesia workstation, patient monitors, suction units, infusion and syringe pumps, defibrillator and warming devices are normally the responsibility of the anaesthesia department, but they should appear on the same plan so that power outlets, gas terminals and shelf space are provided. Include an emergency drug and airway cart outside the theatre for rapid access.

Confirm that all medical electrical equipment complies with IEC 60601-1 and that the room's power supply and earthing meet the hospital's standard for operating theatres.

  • Anaesthesia workstation and patient monitors
  • Suction units and gas terminals
  • Infusion and syringe pumps
  • Defibrillator and patient warming
  • Emergency airway and drug cart

Surgical, imaging and sterile-processing links

Depending on the specialty, add an electrosurgical unit and smoke evacuation, a laparoscopy or endoscopy tower, a C-arm or mobile imaging system, a microscope and specialty instrument sets. Each needs space, power and cable routing, and sterile storage and a link to the central sterile department.

Do not forget storage: wall cabinets, instrument carts and implant storage keep clutter out of the sterile corridor. Also plan scrub sinks, door control, a clock and a communication system.

How to turn the list into a tender

For each item, write the performance requirement, the standards, the accessories, the installation needs and the service expectations. Ask each supplier for training, warranty and spare part commitments. Confirm product registration requirements with the relevant UAE authority and the facility licensing rules with DHA, DOH or MOHAP as applicable.

If you would like help preparing the OR furniture and equipment package, request a quote from Beckfinity. Our specialists can propose a matching list and coordinate installation and delivery.

Finally, set a commissioning plan. Equipment arrives in stages, and each system needs acceptance testing, staff training and documentation before the first patient; build those steps into the schedule rather than leaving them to the last week.

Common mistakes in fit-out planning

The usual mistakes are ordering equipment before the room layout is final, forgetting power outlets and gas terminals for anaesthesia, and underestimating storage. Another is assuming that all brands of ceiling equipment, lights and cameras work together without checking mounting and integration.

Run a layout review with surgeons, nurses and biomedical engineers, mark every device and cable route on the plan, and use mock-ups for the busiest zones before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment is used in the operating room?

At minimum an operating table, surgical lights, anaesthesia equipment, monitors, suction, instrument tables, and specialty equipment such as electrosurgical units and imaging.

Who decides the equipment list?

Typically a team of surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, biomedical engineers and facility planners working from the intended case mix.

Is there a standard equipment list?

Hospital policies and national guidance define minimums, but the list should reflect your specialties and volumes. Confirm requirements with the relevant authority.

Should lights and pendants be purchased with the table?

It often helps to coordinate them, because ceiling positions, services and C-arm paths affect each other. Plan them together.
