Operating table dimensions decide whether a table fits your theatre, your patients and your imaging equipment. Tabletop length and width, the height range, the load ratings and the tilt angles all appear in a datasheet, but the figures are easy to misread. This guide explains each parameter, shows real values for Lojer tables and lists the questions to ask before ordering.
Tabletop length and width in operating table size
Tabletop length and width define the patient support area. Grand Promerix has a table top of 2100 × 540 mm, and Smarter Practico a top width of 540 mm. Scandia Prime has a total length of 2070 mm, and the Rapido day-surgery table is 2050 mm long in the Standard model and 2185 mm in the Upper Body model, with a mattress width of 600 mm.
Remember that length depends on the configuration: sections can be extended, removed or replaced, and the total length with a head or leg section may differ from the top itself. Ask for dimensions with the intended accessories fitted. A wider top helps larger patients but reduces access for the team at the side.
Height range: how low and how high the table goes
The height range defines whether surgeons can work seated or standing, and whether the table goes low enough for transfers and high enough for tall staff. Grand Promerix offers 650–1110 mm, Scandia Prime 595–1005 mm, Rapido 650–1020 mm and Practico Manual 710–1020 mm. Smarter Practico is available with three column height options (General, Low and High).
Check the height measured at the top surface, with the mattress in place; a thick pad raises the patient. For ophthalmic or day surgery, a low minimum height can matter; see our article on the ophthalmic surgery table.
Load ratings: safe working load versus lifting capacity
Two different load figures appear in datasheets. Safe working load is the patient weight the table is rated for in use across its movements; lifting capacity is the maximum mass the lifting column can raise. Smarter Practico lists a safe working load of 280 kg in all directions including slide and a lifting capacity of 460 kg; Grand Promerix lists 275 kg and 490 kg; Scandia Prime 250 kg and 454 kg; Practico Manual 180 kg and 400 kg; Rapido 160 kg safe working load.
Never plan around lifting capacity. Ask whether the safe working load applies in every position, and read our detailed operating table weight capacity article for bariatric considerations.
Hydraulic OT table specification: tilt angles and slide
The movement ranges determine which procedures the table can support. Smarter Practico offers Trendelenburg of plus or minus 30 degrees, lateral tilt of plus or minus 20 degrees and a 390 mm longitudinal slide. Grand Promerix offers minus 35 and plus 35 degrees Trendelenburg and a 410 mm slide. Scandia Prime offers 30 and 20 degrees. Practico Manual, which is hydraulic for height and gas-spring assisted for other movements, offers a back section from minus 30 to plus 70 degrees and lateral tilt of plus or minus 20 degrees.
Longitudinal slide is vital for C-arm and fluoroscopy access; see the guide to the table for C-arm imaging. Compare specifications side by side in a table so that gaps are obvious.
Common mistakes when reading datasheets
Dimension tables are easy to misread. Check the following before you compare models.
- Comparing lifting capacity with safe working load
- Reading height without the mattress
- Ignoring the extra length of head or leg sections
- Forgetting door, lift and ceiling-light clearances during room planning
Weight, footprint and room planning
The table must fit through doors and lifts, and the floor must carry its weight. Scandia Prime weighs 200 kg and Rapido 125 kg. Plan a clear zone around the table for the surgical team, the anaesthetist and mobile equipment, and check ceiling light and pendant clearance at the highest table position. Hidden castors and an inward base cutout, as on Grand Promerix, increase foot space for the team.

Frequently asked questions
What are typical operating table dimensions?
Tops are usually around 500–600 mm wide and about two metres long. For example, Grand Promerix is 2100 × 540 mm. Always confirm the figures for the exact configuration.
What is the height range of an operating table?
It varies. Grand Promerix runs from 650 to 1110 mm, Scandia Prime 595 to 1005 mm and Practico Manual 710 to 1020 mm.
What is the difference between safe working load and lifting capacity?
Safe working load is the patient weight rated for use in all movements; lifting capacity is the maximum the lifting column can raise. Use the safe working load for selection.
Does the mattress change the table height?
Yes. Datasheet heights are normally measured to the top surface, so check whether the mattress is included in the figure.
