Ophthalmic Surgery Table: What Eye Theatres Need

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

An ophthalmic surgery table has to bring the patient's head to the microscope with millimetre stability, give the surgeon unobstructed knee space under a seated working position and keep patients moving through a busy day list. This guide explains the requirements for eye surgery tables, stretchers and chairs, and how the Lojer Rapido and Scandia Prime fit day-surgery ophthalmology.

How ophthalmic surgery differs from general surgery

Most eye surgery is performed under local anaesthesia or sedation with the patient supine and the surgeon seated at the head under a microscope. The patient must be comfortable for a short procedure, remain still, and be able to transfer on and off quickly. Surgical precision depends on a table that does not drift, shake or move unexpectedly.

The table or stretcher therefore needs low height for easy transfer, good head support, adjustable height for the surgeon and open space beneath the head end so that the surgeon's knees can reach the foot controls and the chair can be close.

Eye surgery table: head positioning and stability

Head positioning is critical. Look for a head section that can be adjusted in height and angle, a firm headrest that cradles the head without pressure points, and a stable platform that does not transmit vibration. Mechanical or hydraulic tables with locked castors and a central brake are usually adequate, provided they lock reliably.

Rapido is an all-in-one hydraulic table for pre-induction, transport, operation and recovery, with height adjusted by foot pedals, antistatic twin castors with central locking and an 80 mm visco-elastic mattress. Its open design gives good surgical and imaging access, and patient safety rails are provided during transport.

Ophthalmology stretcher chair and day-surgery flow

Many eye centres use a stretcher chair rather than a conventional table, because it converts between seated and supine and speeds up patient flow. A table that can serve as stretcher, operating surface and recovery bed removes patient transfers, which improves safety and turnover. Rapido is designed for this purpose, with the Standard model suited to gynaecology and urology and the Upper Body model suited to thoracic, ENT and hand and arm work.

For centres that also run other disciplines, a modular table such as Scandia Prime provides a sliding top, interchangeable sections and memory positions, with a height range of 595–1005 mm.

Dimensions and clearance to check

Check the minimum height for easy transfer, the maximum for tall surgeons, and the length and width of the mattress. Rapido has a height of 650–1020 mm, a mattress width of 600 mm and a length of 2050 mm in the Standard model and 2185 mm in the Upper Body model; its safe working load is 160 kg and it weighs 125 kg. Scandia Prime has a total length of 2070 mm and a safe working load of 250 kg. See our operating table dimensions guide for how to read these figures.

Make sure the base does not collide with the surgeon's chair or foot pedals and test the actual set-up with the microscope and chair positioned.

Common mistakes in eye theatres

Eye theatres run on rhythm and precision, so small set-up errors matter. Avoid these.

  • Choosing a table that is too high for transfers or too wide at the head end
  • Not testing foot-pedal and chair clearance with the microscope in place
  • Ignoring castor locks and brake reliability
  • Overlooking patient comfort for a procedure that requires stillness

Choosing and next steps

Define your annual case volume, the type of anaesthesia, whether you need a stretcher function and whether the table will be shared with other specialties. Review the Rapido and Scandia Prime pages and consider the mobile versus fixed table decision. Beckfinity can arrange a trial for your eye theatre; request a quote or consultation.

Frequently asked questions

What table is used for eye surgery?

A stable table or stretcher with good head support, low height for transfer and clearance for the surgeon's chair. Many centres use a stretcher chair or a hydraulic day-surgery table.

Can Rapido be used for ophthalmology?

Rapido is an all-in-one hydraulic table for pre-induction, transport, operation and recovery in day surgery. Confirm suitability for your specific eye procedures with our specialists.

How high should an eye surgery table go?

It depends on the surgeon and the microscope. Rapido adjusts from 650 to 1020 mm and Scandia Prime from 595 to 1005 mm.

Why is stability so important in ophthalmic surgery?

Because the procedure is performed under a microscope and tiny movements matter. The table should not drift, shake or move unexpectedly.
