A urology operating room setup has to support lithotomy positioning, fluoroscopy, video endoscopy, laser or electrosurgical energy and large volumes of irrigation, often in the same case. Poor layout shows up as cable clutter, a C-arm that cannot reach the patient, or a surgeon working with a monitor behind the shoulder. This guide gives hospital planners and OR managers a practical urology OR equipment list and a layout logic for an endourology suite.
Start with the procedure mix
List what the room will do: cystoscopy, ureteroscopy and flexible ureteroscopy, percutaneous work, TURP and enucleation, and possibly bladder tumour resection. Each adds equipment. Stone surgery calls for laser, C-arm and irrigation control, whereas prostate work needs a generator, resectoscope and morcellator. A simple cystoscopy room setup can be smaller, but should still allow lithotomy and a video tower.
The numbers (cases per day, turnaround, number of scopes) drive the room size and storage. For equipment-by-procedure detail see flexible ureteroscopy step by step and TURP equipment guide.
Urology operating table and positioning
A urology operating table must give the surgeon access to the perineum, allow lithotomy leg positioning, tilt for patient position changes and leave space for a C-arm. A low base that permits 360-degree C-arm access, a longitudinal slide for fluoroscopy and a radiolucent top are the features that matter most. Read more in urology operating tables and radiolucent tables and C-arms.
The Lojer Smarter Practico is an electric operating table with a low base for 360-degree C-arm access, a 390 mm longitudinal slide for X-ray and fluoroscopy access, and anti-collision smart movements. It has a safe working load of 280 kg, Trendelenburg of ±30 degrees, lateral tilt of ±20 degrees, a 540 mm table top width, memory positions and Li-ion battery operation. Check accessories such as leg supports with the supplier for your lithotomy requirements.
C-arm, video tower and imaging
Fluoroscopy is used for stone localisation, access and stent placement. The PLX C22 series from Perlove is an integrated mobile C-arm with a choice of 9 or 12 inch flat panel detectors, bilateral laser positioning, a HD touchscreen and a gantry that holds position at any angle. For comparison criteria see C-arm for urology.
The video tower holds the camera controller, light source, monitor and recording. The ENDOCAM Logic 4K delivers 4K output from the camera controller, offers Special Imaging Modes switched from the camera head and stores images and video to USB. Place monitors in the surgeon's line of sight, with a second monitor for the assistant, and consider whether a ceiling pendant or a trolley suits your room; see endoscopy tower: pendant or cart.
Energy, irrigation and fluid management
The energy source depends on your techniques: a holmium or thulium laser for stones and enucleation, and an electrosurgical generator for TURP. Laser rooms need signage, eyewear and a trained team, see laser safety in the urology OR. Plan power and clear floor space for the laser and its footswitch.
Irrigation deserves a place in the plan. FLUID CONTROL 2225 is a suction and irrigation pump used across gynecology, urology and general surgery, with a maximum irrigation flow of 1800 ml/min, maximum suction flow of 2000 ml/min and continuous fluid-deficit display via an optional balancing module. Also plan for waste collection, floor drainage and spill management.
- Laser: footswitch position and fibre handling zone
- Generator: return electrode and cable routing
- Irrigation: bag hanging or pump position, drainage, fluid deficit monitoring
- Suction and waste containers at the foot of the table
Layout checklist and next steps
Check these points on a floor plan before ordering: swing path of the C-arm, tower position relative to the surgeon, cable and tube routing, light position over the perineum, door widths and storage for scopes. Confirm ceiling loads if pendants are planned and plan electrical and data outlets, including network if you integrate imaging. Installation is covered by installation services.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum equipment for a cystoscopy room?
An operating or examination table with lithotomy positioning, a video tower with camera and light source, irrigation, a cystoscope and suction. A C-arm is added if stone work is planned.
Does a urology OR need a C-arm?
For stone surgery and many ureteroscopy cases, usually yes, or immediate access to one. Plan floor space and a table that allows C-arm access.
Which table features matter most for urology?
Perineal access, lithotomy accessories, Trendelenburg and tilt, a radiolucent top and a low base for C-arm movement.
How much space does an endourology suite need?
It depends on the equipment mix; confirm with floor-plan simulations and your supplier's installation drawings.
