Lithotripter Machine Price: Budget Planning by Technology

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

Lithotripter machine price depends first on the technology: a pneumatic probe system, a laser lithotripsy system and a shockwave table sit in very different cost classes, and even within one class the final quote changes with accessories and service. This article explains the cost components, what to include in a purchase budget, and how to ask lithotripter manufacturers for offers that can be compared. It does not quote prices.

Lithotripter price by technology

Pneumatic and ultrasonic lithotripters are usually the least expensive to buy because the console is simple and the probes are reusable. Laser systems cost more at purchase and require fibres, but they are the most versatile, and they dominate flexible ureteroscopy. Extracorporeal shockwave (ESWL) machines are large capital items that need a dedicated room, imaging and often a service engineer on call.

The right technology for you is a clinical and operational question, so start with our overview of lithotripter types and the comparison of laser lithotripsy vs ESWL before comparing quotes.

What a lithotripter equipment quote should include

A complete quote lists the console, handpieces or probes, footswitch, cables, a starter set of consumables, protective eyewear and installation. For laser lithotripsy it must also list the fibre diameters supplied, and whether they are single-use or reusable. For ESWL it should list the table, imaging, coupling accessories and any shock-wave head replacement policy.

Ask for a separate line for training, warranty and maintenance contracts. A cheap device without a service plan can become the most expensive option when a fault stops the list.

  • Console, footswitch, cables and accessories
  • Probes, fibres or shock-wave heads included at purchase
  • Installation, acceptance test and staff training
  • Warranty period and exclusions
  • Maintenance contract and spare-parts policy

Laser lithotripsy system: running costs

Fibres are the main recurring cost of a laser system. Richard Wolf's MegaPulse 70+ is a 70 W holmium:YAG laser with RFID detection of the sterile fibre and its diameter, while Pulvis 60+ is a 60 W thulium fibre laser supporting disposable and reusable fibres from 150 to 1000 µm. Model the number of fibres you expect per procedure and per year.

Also count the scopes. A laser is only useful with ureteroscopes, sheaths and a camera system, and a department without those must budget them together. The weight and space of the device matter too: MegaPulse 70+ weighs 200 kg and Pulvis 60+ weighs 100 kg.

Comparing lithotripter manufacturers

When you compare lithotripter manufacturers, use the same criteria for every offer: technology and power, modes, fibre or probe range, room and power requirements, consumable cost and availability, local service, response time and training. Avoid relying on general statements about reputation; ask for datasheets and a hands-on demonstration in your theatre.

Check that each supplier can document device registration with the relevant authority in the UAE. Facility licensing is a separate matter handled by DHA in Dubai and DOH in Abu Dhabi; confirm the current requirements.

Mistakes that inflate the real cost

The most common mistake is buying on the console price alone and discovering later that fibres, probes or shock-wave heads are expensive or limited to one source. Another is forgetting infrastructure: a laser may need a dedicated circuit, and an ESWL table needs shielding, a room of suitable size and a patient-flow plan.

A third mistake is leaving training to chance. Poor technique shortens the life of fibres and probes and increases repairs. Include a training day for surgeons and nurses in the contract, and ask what refresher training is available later.

How to build the budget and ask for quotes

Work out total cost of ownership over five years: purchase, installation, consumables per case, maintenance, repairs, training for new staff and eventual upgrades. Divide by expected cases to see the cost per procedure, and test the model with a low and a high volume. See also holmium laser price for laser-specific cost drivers, and maintenance services.

Frequently asked questions

Why do lithotripter prices vary so much?

Because technology, power, accessories, consumables, installation and service differ greatly. Compare itemised offers for the same specification.

Is a laser lithotripter more expensive than a pneumatic one?

Laser systems usually cost more to buy and need fibres, but they are more versatile, especially with flexible scopes.

What recurring costs should be budgeted?

Fibres or probes, maintenance, repairs, spare parts, training and, for scopes, reprocessing.

Should I buy the scopes with the lithotripter?

If you do not already have compatible ureteroscopes, sheaths and a camera system, budget them together so that the set can be used from day one.
