Villa Melody IIID TS: Integrated Tomosynthesis Mammography Unit Explained

Updated 14 October 2026 · 3 min read

Melody IIID TS tomosynthesis is the flagship of Villa's Melody III digital mammography range, combining integrated 3D tomosynthesis with a full-field digital system and an optional Dual Energy mode. For radiology managers comparing a 3D mammography unit with a 2D base model, the choice comes down to caseload, breast density in the population, biopsy plans and the reading infrastructure. This overview covers the main features and the decision points.

Melody IIID TS tomosynthesis: core specification

The Melody IIID TS reconstructs the breast volume from multiple angled projections. Three scan angles are selectable (15°, 24° and 50°), an anti-scatter grid is used during the scan, and the collimation field is corrected dynamically. With the optional Fast a-Se detector, the scan times listed are 2.5 s, 4 s and 7.7 s.

The mechanical platform is a motorised isocentric C-arm with 180° rotation, automatic exposure control and the Smart Micro Press compression system. The detector can be a-Si/CsI or, as an option, a-Se in Standard or Fast versions.

Villa Melody tomosynthesis in the clinical workflow

A mammography machine with tomosynthesis changes the day-to-day workflow in three places: acquisition time under compression, reconstruction and transfer of large datasets, and reading time. Scan time and the choice of angle affect the first; the reporting station and network affect the other two.

The multimodality acquisition station can be connected to AESTIMAX or WorkstationONE reporting stations with optional AI tools. Ask your PACS administrator to size storage for tomosynthesis studies, which are far larger than 2D mammograms, and confirm which DICOM objects the station exports.

Biopsy and Dual Energy options

The unit supports tomo-guided biopsy with the optional SBD DMD 3D device, and the manufacturer lists a biopsy targeting accuracy of ±0.1 mm. This is useful when lesions are seen only on tomosynthesis and cannot be located on the 2D image. Our article on tomosynthesis-guided biopsy covers the procedure and room requirements.

The optional Dual Energy mode supports contrast-enhanced work. If you plan this, you also need a suitable injector and a protocol; see contrast-enhanced mammography equipment for details.

Choosing a mammography machine with tomosynthesis: TS or base model

The Melody IIID base model can be upgraded in the field, so the TS is not the only route to 3D. The TS makes sense when tomosynthesis is needed from day one: a screening programme, a population with a high share of dense breasts, or a referral centre that wants one unit for both screening and workup.

The base model suits phased investments. Compare the total cost of ownership, including service, detector options and upgrade licences, and ask for the quote to be itemised so that the 3D option is visible as a separate line.

Comparing 3D mammography systems: what to ask any manufacturer

Buyers often ask how a Hologic 3D mammography system or other brands compare. A fair comparison uses neutral criteria rather than brand names: scan time and angle options, detector technology, dose per acquisition mode, AEC performance in dense breasts, biopsy integration, reading station and AI options, service coverage in the UAE and upgrade policy.

Request each vendor's data in the same format and verify it with your medical physicist. To discuss a configuration, request a quote or a consultation from Beckfinity's specialists, who can also advise on room preparation and installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Melody IIID TS?

It is the top model of the Villa Melody III digital mammography line, with integrated 3D tomosynthesis and optional Dual Energy mode.

How many scan angles does it have?

Three selectable angles: 15°, 24° and 50°.

Can it be used for biopsy?

Yes, with the optional stereotactic and tomo-guided biopsy configuration, using the SBD DMD 3D device for tomo-guided procedures.

Is a mammography machine with tomosynthesis always better than 2D?

It depends on caseload, density and workflow. Tomosynthesis adds data volume and reading time, so plan storage and workstations accordingly.
