Melody IIID Digital Mammography Unit from Villa Sistemi Medicali

Updated 14 October 2026 · 3 min read

Villa Melody mammography is a family of digital breast-imaging systems from the Italian manufacturer Villa Sistemi Medicali, and the Melody IIID is its upgradable model. It is designed for clinics that want to start with 2D digital mammography and add tomosynthesis, biopsy or Dual Energy later without replacing the unit. This overview covers the configuration, what can be upgraded on site and the questions to ask before choosing it.

About Villa Sistemi Medicali and the Melody III line

Villa Sistemi Medicali was founded in 1958 and is headquartered in Buccinasco, Italy. It designs and manufactures diagnostic radiology systems, including remote-controlled R/F tables, digital and mobile X-ray, mammography and surgical C-arms. Beckfinity distributes the range in the UAE through its Villa brand page.

Within the digital mammography range, the Melody III line is split into the Melody IIID, the field-upgradable model, and the Melody IIID TS, which has integrated tomosynthesis. A clinic that expects its service to grow will usually compare the two, and our article on the Melody IIID TS covers the second.

Melody IIID configuration and key features

The Melody IIID can be configured with an a-Si/CsI flat-panel detector or an optional a-Se detector. It has a fully motorised isocentric C-arm with 180° rotation, decremental compression with the Smart Micro Press system and density-based automatic exposure control, together with dual touchscreen control panels.

The multimodality acquisition station provides full DICOM functions and can work with AESTIMAX or WorkstationONE reporting stations. The manufacturer lists a biopsy targeting accuracy of ±0.1 mm when the optional stereotactic biopsy system is fitted.

On-site upgrades: tomosynthesis, biopsy and Dual Energy

The main selling point of this model is that it can be upgraded in the field to tomosynthesis, tomo-guided biopsy and Dual Energy mode. For a hospital planning its capital budget in stages, this allows a 2D service to open first and 3D or contrast-enhanced work to follow when the caseload justifies it.

Before ordering, confirm in writing which upgrades are included in the offer, which need hardware and which are licences, how long an upgrade takes on site and whether the unit will be out of service during that period. Ask also whether the detector you choose now supports the future options.

Who the Villa mammography unit suits

The Melody IIID fits private clinics, women's health centres and hospital departments that need a digital mammography system with a clear growth path. Its on-site upgrade route makes it relevant when budget is phased, or when the breast-imaging service is new and the case mix is not yet known.

If your service is already screening-heavy, or if dense breasts are a large share of the population, compare it directly with the integrated-tomosynthesis model. Our guide to tomosynthesis for dense breasts explains why that matters.

Questions to ask before purchase

Ask for the site-planning drawing, power and floor requirements, the shielding assumptions used and the list of DICOM services supported. Confirm reporting station compatibility with your PACS and whether AI tools are optional or included. See our practical note on room design and shielding for planning.

Also clarify warranty, preventive maintenance interval, spare-part availability in the UAE and application training. Beckfinity's specialists can prepare a configuration and quote and coordinate delivery and installation; request a consultation to start.
