BOWA ARC PLUS: Adding Argon to Your Electrosurgical Unit

Updated 14 October 2026 · 3 min read

BOWA ARC PLUS is an argon unit that docks with the ARC 400 or ARC 350 generator and turns it into a workstation for argon plasma coagulation (APC) and argon-assisted electrosurgery. For UAE hospitals that already own or plan to buy a BOWA ARC generator, it is the route to contact-free haemostasis without a separate stand-alone argon platform. Here is what the manufacturer lists, and what to plan for when you add argon.

What ARC PLUS is

ARC PLUS is a docking module rather than a separate generator. It connects to the ARC 400 or ARC 350, which supplies the high-frequency energy, while ARC PLUS controls the argon gas flow. Ionised argon forms an electrical bridge to the tissue, so haemostasis happens without touching it, which is useful on large bleeding surfaces such as the liver and for fine dosing on delicate structures.

For readers new to the method, our overview of argon plasma coagulation explains the physics and typical indications.

Operating modes

The manufacturer lists modes for open and laparoscopic surgery and gynaecology (Argon CUT and COAG) and for internal medicine and gastroenterology with flexible probes (Argon FLEX and PULSED). Argon CUT provides argon-assisted cutting, while COAG covers surface coagulation. FLEX and PULSED are matched to the thin flexible probes that pass through an endoscope channel.

Argon instruments are recognised automatically, so the unit loads suitable settings when you connect them. Ask for the list of compatible instruments and probes in your configuration; see our guide to APC probes for how rigid and flexible probes differ.

  • Argon CUT and COAG for open and laparoscopic surgery
  • Argon FLEX and PULSED for flexible probes
  • Automatic instrument recognition
  • Argon ignition distance above 10 mm

Technical data and gas handling

Argon flow ranges from 0.1 to 10 l/min with a maximum outlet pressure of 2 bar. The unit measures 433 × 97 × 489 mm and weighs 7.7 kg. It holds two argon cylinders, with a level indicator and pre-warning, so the second cylinder can take over when the first runs low. A mobile ARC CART is available for the combined stack.

Gas handling is a safety topic in its own right. Secure cylinders against falling, use regulators intended for argon, and train staff to change cylinders without interrupting a case unexpectedly. In laparoscopy, argon adds gas to the abdomen, so the team must ensure the pneumoperitoneum can vent. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and your hospital protocol.

Where it fits in the ARC family

The ARC 400 and the ARC 350 both accept ARC PLUS. If you already have one of these generators, adding the module is a simple expansion; if you are buying new, specify the stack at the outset so that cabling, trolley and cylinders are planned together. For a comparison of the two generators see our ARC 350 overview.

Note that APC uses a monopolar circuit, so all the usual precautions about return electrode placement, patients with implanted devices and smoke apply. Pair argon work with a smoke evacuator where smoke is generated.

Purchasing checklist

Before ordering, clarify the following points with the supplier.

  • Which probes, applicators and tubing sets are included and how they are supplied
  • Whether the cylinders are included and local argon supply arrangements
  • Training for endoscopy nurses and theatre staff
  • Service coverage and calibration of the flow controller
  • Availability of the ARC CART for mobility

Next step

Argon capability is valuable when you routinely control diffuse bleeding, treat superficial lesions endoscopically or operate on parenchymal organs. If those cases are infrequent, a standard generator may be enough. Beckfinity's specialists can review your case mix and provide a configuration; contact us to request a quote or a demonstration.

Frequently asked questions

Can ARC PLUS be used on its own?

No. It docks with the ARC 400 or ARC 350, which supply the high-frequency energy.

What argon flow range does it offer?

0.1 to 10 l/min, with a maximum outlet pressure of 2 bar.

Can it be used in endoscopy?

Yes, the Argon FLEX and PULSED modes are intended for internal medicine and gastroenterology with flexible probes.

How many cylinders does it hold?

Two argon cylinders, with a level indicator and pre-warning.
