MRI Injector Systems: How a Contrast Injector for MRI Differs from CT

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

An MRI injector delivers gadolinium-based contrast media and a saline flush to the patient at a controlled volume and flow rate during magnetic resonance examinations. Although it follows the same principle as a CT injector, the environment and requirements are different: it has to work next to a strong magnet, with smaller volumes and lower pressure. This guide explains what an MRI power injector is and what MRI departments should check.

What a power injector for MRI does

A power injector MRI system gives repeatable timing and flow for contrast-enhanced sequences, including dynamic and angiographic acquisitions where bolus timing matters. The operator sets the contrast volume, saline volume and flow rate, and the injection is started manually or in coordination with the scanner. The clinical protocol is the responsibility of your radiologists.

The system is also used in PET-MRI and, in some departments, for contrast-enhanced mammography. The Max 3 and the Max 2M are both listed for MRI, PET-MRI and CEDM/CESM.

How a contrast injector for MRI differs from a CT injector

MRI contrast volumes are typically smaller than CT volumes, flow rates are lower and system pressure requirements are lower. The Max 3 and Max 2M list a maximum system pressure of 14 bar (203.1 psi), with contrast containers up to 200 ml for MRI. By comparison, CT injectors may work up to 17 or 22.4 bar and with containers of 500 ml to 1 litre.

The most important difference is the magnetic environment. Any equipment used near the magnet must have a clear MR safety classification and must be used within its stated limits. Ask the supplier for the MR labelling of every part that enters the scanner room and for guidance on permitted zones and field strengths. Our article on MR-conditional injector safety covers this in detail.

  • MR safety labelling and permitted zone are essential

Features of an MRI injector system

The Max 3 has two contrast connections and one saline connection, drawing directly from original containers, with the CM-Loop function for automatic switchover to a second container of the same contrast and optional CM-Select to change to a different contrast without changing the cassette. The Max 2M has one contrast and one saline connection, and an integrated Keep-Vein-Open function.

Both use a 24-hour Easy-Click-Cassette with an RFID chip that blocks reuse after 24 hours, air detection in the patient tubing that stops the injection, battery operation and Wi-Fi communication with the terminal. They are compact: 530 x 530 x 1,372 mm and about 40 kg.

Choosing an injector for MRI: Max 3 or Max 2M

The choice between one and two contrast connections depends on your protocols and throughput. The Max 3 allows a second contrast agent to be available, while the Max 2M is positioned by the manufacturer as a cost-efficient option, even for sites with lower patient throughput. Consider whether you use more than one contrast agent in daily practice.

Also check the workflow: how the cassette is loaded, how the terminal is positioned, how quickly the system is ready between patients, and what documentation of injection parameters is available. For price considerations see our note on MRI injector price.

Practical questions before purchase

Confirm MR safety documentation, the field strengths and zones in which each component may be used, cassette and consumable supply in the UAE, training and service coverage. Check the local registration status where applicable. Read the model pages for the Ulrich Medical brand and ask our team for application details.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MRI injector?

A device that delivers contrast media and saline into a vein at a controlled volume and flow rate during MRI examinations.

Can a CT injector be used for MRI?

Not unless it is designed and labelled for the MR environment. MRI injectors must work safely near the magnet.

What is the Max 3 pressure?

A maximum system pressure of 14 bar (203.1 psi).

What is the difference between Max 3 and Max 2M?

Max 3 has two contrast connections; Max 2M has one contrast connection and a Keep-Vein-Open function.
