Multi Patient Contrast Injector Tubing: Infection Control Rules

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

Multi patient contrast injector tubing is a safe, widely used approach when the manufacturer's design and the instructions for use are respected, but it relies on strict separation between the part that is shared and the part that touches the patient. This article explains how 24-hour tubing, single-use patient lines and bulk contrast containers fit into an infection-control routine, what the design must prevent and which checks and training a department needs. Local infection-prevention policy and the instructions for your model always take precedence.

The principle: shared pump side, single-use patient side

In a multi-patient system, the pump tubing or cassette that draws fluid from the containers is used for a defined period and many patients, while the patient line that connects to the cannula is replaced for every patient. The aim of the design is that nothing from the patient can travel back into the shared path, and that the shared path is protected from contamination at the connection.

The ulrich medical CT motion uses pump tubing that stays in use for 24 hours, with only the patient tubing changed between examinations. The MRI injector Max 3 uses a 24-hour Easy-Click-Cassette with an RFID chip that blocks reuse after 24 hours.

Prevention also depends on environment: keep the injector away from splash zones, wipe the console between patients with the approved agent and store spare sets in their sealed packaging in a clean, dry area.

24 hour contrast injector tubing: time limits matter

The 24-hour limit is part of the design and must be treated as a hard limit. Record the time the set was started, replace it when the period ends or when the label or alarm requires, and never extend it to finish a list. On Max 3 the RFID chip enforces this by preventing reuse after 24 hours; on tubing without such a chip, a log and a clear start label are essential.

Also replace the set at once if it is damaged, contaminated, or if the integrity of a connection is in doubt. If the injector shows an error that may indicate a leak or backflow, stop and follow the instructions for use.

  • Label the set with date and start time
  • Replace at the end of the labelled period without exception
  • Replace after any suspected contamination or damage
  • Record each set change in the log

Single-use patient line and aseptic handling

A single use patient line is opened just before use, connected without touching the connector ends and discarded after the patient. Wear gloves, clean hands, avoid touching open ports and never reconnect a line to a second patient. The connection between the patient line and the shared tubing should be made so that fingers do not touch the sterile surfaces, and the MRI cassette design includes a touch-protected connection to support this.

Priming and air purging should use the sequence in the instructions, with the line end kept sterile. Our set-up guide lists the steps.

Never prepare patient lines in advance for a whole list; open them at the point of use so the sterile barrier is intact until the patient is connected.

Bulk contrast media use and container handling

Bulk contrast media use means drawing from large containers for several patients. Follow the product label for how long an opened container may be used and under what conditions, and follow your pharmacy's policy. Use the connection for each container only as intended, avoid touching spikes or connectors and replace a container when the label limit is reached, even if some fluid remains.

Writing the open time on the container, as with warmed media in the warming rules article, keeps staff consistent.

Training, audit and support

Infection control is largely about people. Provide training on hand hygiene, aseptic connection and set replacement, run periodic spot audits and keep the instructions at the console. Review the routine whenever the staff or the system change.

Frequently asked questions

How long can multi-patient tubing stay in use?

For CT motion, the pump tubing is used for 24 hours and the patient tubing is changed for each patient. For Max 3 the cassette is used for 24 hours.

Can a patient line be reused?

No. The patient line is single use and must be replaced for every patient.

How long may an opened contrast container be used?

Follow the product label and your pharmacy policy; limits differ between products.

What if I suspect contamination?

Stop, replace the affected set and report according to your infection-control policy.
