An injector dual ct scan setup means one device that delivers contrast medium and a saline chaser through a single patient line, in a programmed sequence. It has become the default in modern CT departments because saline pushes the contrast bolus out of the tubing and veins, makes the bolus more compact and helps use contrast more efficiently. This article explains how the two channels work, what dual-flow injection means and what to check before buying.
What a dual head CT injector actually is
The phrase dual head CT injector comes from older syringe-based systems, where two physical syringes (one for contrast, one for saline) sat in two heads of the injector. Today the same function is delivered in different ways: two syringe heads, or a syringeless pump that draws contrast and saline directly from their containers. What matters for the user is not the number of heads but that the device can run a contrast phase and a saline phase back to back, or at the same time, under one protocol.
The ulrich medical CT motion is a syringeless example. It has three media connection points, two for contrast and one for saline, so the ct injector head in the classic sense is replaced by a roll pump and 24-hour pump tubing. The saline container can hold up to 2,000 ml, and the contrast containers up to 500 ml each.
Why the saline flush matters
After the contrast phase ends, a part of the bolus is still sitting in the patient line and in the peripheral veins. A saline flush CT injector protocol pushes this residual volume forward so that it contributes to enhancement rather than being left behind. Departments commonly report that this allows contrast volume to be tuned more precisely, and it also reduces dense contrast in the superior vena cava and right heart, which can cause streak artefacts in chest and cardiac studies. Whether and how much to reduce volume is a clinical decision for the radiologist.
A saline chaser also helps the patient line stay clear between injections and gives the operator a clear signal that the line is patent before the diagnostic run begins.
- Pushes residual contrast from the line and veins into the circulation
- Allows a more compact, better-defined bolus
- Can reduce streak artefacts from dense contrast in central veins
- Supports repeatable results between operators
Dual flow contrast injection: what it adds
Dual flow contrast injection means that contrast and saline are delivered simultaneously in a defined ratio for part of the protocol, instead of strictly one after the other. This lowers the concentration of contrast in the final phase of the bolus, which is useful where a dense bolus in the right heart would hide structures, for example in some cardiac and pulmonary protocols.
To use this, the injector must be able to run two media at once at programmable flows and to handle the sequence automatically. When you compare systems, ask the supplier to show a multiphase protocol on screen: contrast, mixed phase, saline. The protocol logic itself is covered in our article on CT contrast injection protocols.
What to check when specifying a dual-channel injector
Start from the workflow. A device with automatic switchover to a second container of the same contrast (Seamless on CT motion) avoids interrupting a busy list when a bottle empties, and dual air detection in the pump and patient tubing stops the injection if bubbles are found. An integrated contrast heater keeps contrast warm to improve viscosity.
Then check capability. For high flow rates and viscous media, the higher-pressure CT motion SPICY offers system pressure up to 22.4 bar and 1-litre contrast containers, compared with 17 bar on CT motion. Pressure and containers are discussed in more detail in the article on pressure limits.
- Number and type of media connections (two contrast and one saline)
- Container sizes and automatic switchover
- Air detection in pump and patient tubing
- Maximum pressure and connection to the scanner
- Disposable set: how long it stays in use and what changes per patient

Frequently asked questions
Is a dual-head injector the same as a dual-flow injector?
No. Dual head describes the hardware (two channels for contrast and saline). Dual flow describes a protocol in which contrast and saline are delivered at the same time. A dual-channel injector is needed for dual flow, but the protocol still has to be programmed.
Do I need a saline flush for every CT scan?
Not every study, and the decision belongs to the radiologist and the local protocol. Most contrast-enhanced CT work, especially angiography and cardiac imaging, uses a saline chaser, which is why dual-channel injectors are standard.
How many contrast media connections does CT motion have?
Three media connection points: two for contrast and one for saline. Containers of up to 500 ml are used for contrast and up to 2,000 ml for saline.
Can a syringeless injector do a saline flush?
Yes. In a syringeless system the roll pump draws saline from its own container and delivers it after, or together with, the contrast phase. The pump tubing stays in use for 24 hours.
