The Richard Wolf ureteroscope range is a single-source family of flexible sensor endoscopes for endourology: BOA and COBRA ureterorenoscopes and the MAMBA cystoscope. All three connect to the ENDOCAM Logic 4K controller and support Special Imaging Modes. This overview compares their size, channels and deflection and explains which fits which service, so teams can match a scope to a case mix.
A single-source family
BOA, COBRA and MAMBA are designed to work with the same camera controller, which simplifies the tower and staff training. Every scope delivers a high-resolution digital image and supports SIM, Special Imaging Modes, to help differentiate tissue.
The handle is ergonomic with an axial cable exit. Because the scopes share the same 4K platform, a department can add cystoscopy and ureteroscopy without a second imaging system. See the product page for details.
When choosing between the three, start from the service rather than the scope: a stone service needs the ureterorenoscopes, a diagnostic clinic the cystoscope. Many hospitals buy one of each and use the shared controller to move between rooms. Ask your supplier whether the controller supports several scopes being kept ready at the same time.
BOA: super-slim ureterorenoscope
BOA is a single-channel scope for difficult and narrow anatomies, including pediatric use. It has an 8.7 Fr shaft and a 6.6 Fr tip, 270° deflection up and down, and fits access sheaths of 9.5 Fr and above.
This makes BOA a candidate when a slim profile and sheath compatibility are priorities. It has one working channel, so instruments and irrigation share it.
Deflection of 270° up and down helps the surgeon reach lower-pole calyces, which is one of the practical tests of any flexible ureteroscope. Check the deflection with an instrument in the channel during a demonstration, since instruments can limit the effective angle.
COBRA: two channels and the laser shifter
COBRA is a two-channel ureterorenoscope with a 5.2 Fr distal tip, a 3.6 Fr working channel and a separate 2.4 Fr laser channel for fibers up to 365 µm. Deflection is 270° up and down.
A laser shifter fixes and positions the fiber during stone treatment, so laser lithotripsy and stone extraction can run in parallel. The channel arrangement supports the workflow described in flexible ureteroscopy step by step.
With a laser fiber in the dedicated channel, the main working channel stays free for a basket or irrigation. Fibers beyond 365 µm do not fit the laser channel, so confirm your fiber inventory against this limit before ordering.
- 5.2 Fr distal tip
- 3.6 Fr working channel
- 2.4 Fr laser channel for fibers up to 365 µm
- Laser shifter for fiber positioning
- 270° deflection
MAMBA: flexible cystoscope
MAMBA is the flexible cystoscope of the family. It has a 7.5 Fr working and irrigation channel, 210° deflection and two distal LEDs for even illumination of the bladder.
For outpatient and diagnostic use, a flexible cystoscope on the same controller is convenient. Compare uses in our ureteroscope vs cystoscope guide and read the flexible cystoscope guide.
Two LEDs at the tip give even illumination, which helps during a systematic inspection of the bladder wall. As with any flexible scope, leak testing and careful reprocessing after each use protect the investment.
Buying notes and IFU
Request the instructions for use (IFU) for each scope from your supplier; they contain reprocessing and compatibility information. Confirm accessories, sheaths, camera controller version and the service model in the UAE. Registration requirements should be confirmed with MOHAP, DHA or DOH.
Beckfinity can supply the family together with lasers such as the MegaPulse 70+ and arrange installation. Request a quote through the contact page.
