SHARK Resectoscope by Richard Wolf: Design, Sheaths and System Fit

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

The Richard Wolf resectoscope SHARK is a modular resectoscope for urology designed to be functional, precise and ergonomic. Its parts join and separate through snap-on couplings, it uses continuous-irrigation double sheaths and it pairs with an HF generator, a morcellator and laser sources for enucleation. This overview explains the design, the sizes and how SHARK fits into a department’s resection and enucleation workflow.

Design principles of the SHARK

SHARK was designed around ergonomics and quick handling. Components join and separate with snap-on couplings, which simplifies assembly and cleaning. The design received an iF product design award in 2013.

The working element has shark-fin finger support and thumb rings, and the electrode fork has been redesigned with an electrode arrest. These details matter in long resections, where hand fatigue and electrode stability influence control.

For the operating room team, a modular design also means less time between cases. Parts that separate quickly are easier to clean, inspect and repack, and a missing seal or a damaged insulation is easier to spot. Ask your supplier for the recommended reprocessing steps and the list of wear parts that should be kept in stock.

Continuous-flow resectoscope: sheaths and irrigation

A continuous flow resectoscope uses an inner and an outer sheath so irrigation enters and leaves at the same time, keeping bladder pressure low and the view clear. SHARK offers continuous-irrigation sheaths of 22/24 Fr and 24/26 Fr, and single sheaths of 24 and 26 Fr are also listed.

The inner sheath rotates through 360° and the irrigation taps are enlarged for better flow. SHARK working elements remain compatible with earlier Richard Wolf resectoscope sheaths, which protects instruments you already own. The SHARK product page has further details.

When you specify sheaths, think about the patient mix and the procedure. A larger outer diameter gives higher flow and room for instruments, while a smaller diameter eases passage through the urethra. Having both 22/24 Fr and 24/26 Fr sheaths in the department gives surgeons the choice without changing the platform.

  • 22/24 Fr and 24/26 Fr continuous-irrigation sheaths
  • 24 Fr and 26 Fr sheaths
  • Inner sheath rotatable through 360°
  • Enlarged irrigation taps
  • Snap-on couplings

Monopolar, bipolar and the generator

A resectoscope is only as flexible as the energy source behind it. The HF-GENERATOR 2260 is built for use with existing Richard Wolf instruments and offers presets for monopolar and bipolar TUR-P, TUR-B, bipolar enucleation and hysteroscopic resection, with cutting power up to 400 W and coagulation up to 350 W.

Bipolar electrode ignition allows cutting without tissue contact, RFID detection speeds set-up and a toggle footswitch combines two profiles. For the choice between modes, read our bipolar resectoscope comparison.

The practical value of the generator presets is that the voltage is kept within the limit permitted for the connected instrument; the touch display guides this. That is a safety point worth discussing with your biomedical engineers when comparing electrosurgical units.

Imaging and enucleation with SHARK

SHARK accepts the ENDOCAM Logic HD PENDUAL camera head, which allows the surgeon to operate from a screen. For enucleation, the platform pairs with PIRANHA, a morcellation line designed to work with SHARK resectoscopes, and with laser sources such as the holmium and thulium devices in the Richard Wolf range.

This means a department can use one resectoscope family for TURP, bladder tumour resection and enucleation, which limits duplication of instruments and training. See holmium laser enucleation equipment for the complete tower.

Compared with a plain resection set, an enucleation workflow also requires a laser and room preparation. If you are considering this step, read the ThuLEP overview and the guide to what a resectoscope is in what is a resectoscope.

What to check before buying

Confirm which sheath sizes you need, the telescope angle, the camera and generator compatibility and the electrode range. Ask about spare parts, repair and loan units in the UAE, and request the instructions for use for reprocessing. Registration requirements should be confirmed with MOHAP, DHA or DOH.

Beckfinity can prepare a SHARK configuration with generator, camera and accessories and arrange installation. Send your requirements via the contact page to request a quote.
