X-ray machine repair starts long before an engineer opens a cover: a structured first-line check often separates a simple setting or connection problem from a genuine hardware fault. This guide is for biomedical engineers and department managers. It covers the common groups of faults in X-ray and DR equipment, the checks that are safe for hospital staff, and when to stop and call authorised service.
Safety first: what in-house staff should and should not do
X-ray systems contain high voltage, stored energy and radiation. Hospital staff should limit themselves to external checks: power, cables, indicators, error messages, restart and documented user-level procedures. Internal work on the generator, high-voltage tank, tube or collimator belongs to trained and authorised engineers following the service manual.
Record the fault before you touch anything: error code, what the operator was doing, whether it repeats and what changed recently. A clear fault report speeds up any repair and helps the supplier choose the right engineer and parts. Photographs of the screen and a short video of the symptom are often more useful than a long description.
Generator errors and exposure inhibits
Typical messages relate to door or interlock open, tube temperature or heat-unit limits, rotor or anode speed, overload, mains supply problems or a communication error between console and generator. First, check that doors are closed, emergency stops are released, the tube has had time to cool and the mains supply is stable. If the message returns, note the code and call service.
A fault that appears at certain exposure settings only, or that gets worse with use, points to a hardware issue and should be reported rather than worked around.
Flat panel detector not connecting
When a flat panel detector is not connecting, check the basics: battery charge and fit for wireless panels, cable seating and damage for wired ones, the access point or network link, correct IP settings, and whether the workstation has been recently updated or restarted. A restart of the detector and workstation in the order given in the manual resolves many cases.
If the detector connects but behaves badly, or after a drop or impact, stop using it and call service; internal damage can be invisible. Calibration and care are covered in flat panel detector calibration and care.
Digital X-ray artifacts and what they suggest
Lines, bands or non-uniform areas often come from detector calibration that has expired, defective pixel maps, poor contact in the signal path or a grid problem. Grid lines or cut-off point to grid alignment, distance or angle. Residual images (ghosting) can follow a very high exposure. Bright or dark spots may be dust on the collimator or a damaged detector area.
Use a simple uniform exposure and compare with a previous good image. Repeat the test after recalibration if the manual allows it. Image quality checks are part of X-ray quality control testing.
X-ray tube arcing, noise and when to call service
Tube arcing or discharge appears as crackling noises, unstable exposure or sudden aborts, and can be caused by tube ageing, poor warm-up, or a high-voltage cable connection problem. Do not keep exposing: further operation can damage the generator. Perform the manufacturer's warm-up procedure only as specified and then call service. Frequently asked questions
What can hospital staff check themselves?
External items: power, cables, indicators, doors and interlocks, error messages and user-level restarts. Internal work belongs to authorised engineers.
Why is my flat panel detector not connecting?
Common causes are battery or cable issues, network or access-point problems, incorrect IP settings or a pending restart after an update.
What causes lines in digital X-ray images?
Often expired calibration, defective pixels, signal-path contact problems or grid issues. Compare with a uniform exposure and call service if they persist.
Is tube arcing serious?
Yes. Stop exposing, record the circumstances and call authorised service.
