How to build and budget an X-ray room: the cost components

Updated 14 October 2026 · 3 min read

X-ray room cost is never just the price of the X-ray system. The equipment is the largest single item, but shielding, construction works, electrical supply, IT, licensing and long-term service all belong in the budget. This guide lists the components of a realistic budget for a hospital or clinic in the UAE, explains which items are most often forgotten and shows how to ask suppliers for comparable quotations. We deliberately give no prices: they vary by project and supplier.

The equipment package

The core is the X-ray system itself: generator, tube, table, wall stand or ceiling tubestand, detectors, acquisition workstation and software. The configuration changes the cost significantly: fixed or wireless detectors, floor column or ceiling tubestand, optional stitching or image-processing packages. A modular DR room such as the Villa Moviplan iC DR can be built with a floor column or a ceiling tubestand, which is a good example of an option that moves both the equipment and the room works.

To compare equipment prices fairly, read X-ray machine price factors and make sure every quotation covers the same scope: accessories, installation, application training and warranty.

Shielding: lead sheet, lead door and glass

Radiation shielding is the second major block. Walls, floor, ceiling, the entrance door and the control window must give the protection required by the radiation protection assessment for your workload, equipment and neighbouring areas. The result is usually expressed as lead equivalence, so do not buy shielding by thickness alone; ask for the required lead equivalent for each surface from the qualified physicist or consultant.

Items to price separately are lead lining of walls where needed, a lead-lined door with frame, an automatic door if required, lead glass for the observation window and door interlocks. See X-ray room shielding and lead doors and lead glass for details.

Construction, electrical and building services

Plan the room works: partitions, floor finish, ceiling structure, cable trays or floor ducts, lighting, air conditioning and ventilation that keeps temperature stable for the equipment and comfortable for staff. A ceiling tubestand needs structural support, which should be confirmed by an engineer. A dedicated electrical supply, correct protective earthing and an emergency power-off arrangement are normally part of the requirements for the X-ray generator.

Room size and layout drive both construction and equipment choice; see X-ray room design requirements, room size and layout and site preparation.

Safety items, IT and approvals

Add warning signs and lights, lead aprons and thyroid collars, personal dosimeters, and network and PACS integration. Budget for the radiation protection survey and acceptance testing performed by a qualified expert before clinical use.

Licensing and registration are separate from equipment price. Facilities are licensed by DHA, DOH or other regulators depending on the emirate, medical devices must be registered with the relevant authority, and radiation sources are regulated by FANR. Requirements and timelines change, so check current rules with each body; see FANR licensing for X-ray.

Total cost of ownership and how to compare quotations

Over the life of the room, service contracts, tube replacement, detector care, software updates and consumables can be as important as the purchase price. Ask each supplier to state warranty length, what is included in preventive maintenance and how fast engineers respond. Our article on tender specifications for X-ray equipment helps you write requirements that make quotations comparable.

Beckfinity specialists can prepare a configuration, a room plan and a clear scope for a new X-ray room, covering delivery, installation and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in X-ray room cost?

Equipment, shielding, construction and electrical works, building services, safety items, IT integration, approvals, installation, training and service.

Is shielding a large part of the budget?

It is a major block. Walls, door, observation glass and interlocks must meet the requirement set by the radiation protection assessment.

Who decides the lead thickness?

A qualified physicist or radiation protection expert, based on workload, equipment and adjacent spaces.

Do licensing steps affect the budget?

Yes. Registration, facility licensing, FANR requirements and acceptance testing all take time and resources, so check current rules early.
