A dermatome skin graft machine harvests a thin, even sheet of skin from a donor site so that wounds and burns can be covered, and an electric dermatome does this with a consistent blade speed and adjustable depth. This guide explains how the system works, which settings matter, how to pair a dermatome with a mesher and what burn and plastic surgery units in the UAE should check before buying.
What an electric dermatome does
A dermatome removes a split-thickness skin graft: the epidermis and part of the dermis. The surgeon glides the dermatome over a stretched, supported donor area, usually on the thigh or another flat region, while an oscillating blade cuts a sheet at a pre-set thickness and width. The donor site heals from the remaining dermal elements.
An electric dermatome replaces older hand-operated knives and air-driven models in many units. The motor is controlled from a console and foot switch, which gives repeatable blade movement and frees the surgeon's hands to maintain tension and contact. Choice of method remains a surgical decision.
Settings that matter: depth, width and blade
Three parameters define a graft: thickness, width and length. The NOUVAG Dermatome offers cutting widths of 75 or 100 mm and a cutting depth adjustable from 0.05 to 1.0 mm, with a tool-free blade change. The adjustable scale should be easy to read and hold its setting under use.
Check how the blade is mounted and replaced, because blade changes happen often in a burns list. Tool-free changes save time and reduce handling risk. Ask the supplier how the depth gauge is calibrated and verified, since a graft cut thicker or thinner than intended affects both take and donor-site healing.
- Cutting width options (for example 75 mm and 100 mm).
- Adjustable cutting depth and clarity of the scale.
- Tool-free blade change and blade availability.
- Handpiece weight and cable management.
The motor system behind the dermatome
The dermatome needs a motor. The NOUVAG TCM 3000 BL is a compact control unit for reconstructive surgery with speeds of 500 to 40,000 rpm and up to 7.5 Ncm of torque. It weighs 1.8 kg and measures 120 x 180 x 110 mm, uses an INTRA (ISO 3964) coupling, and also drives drills and saws, so the same console can serve skin grafting and other reconstructive tasks.
This flexibility is useful in smaller units where one console must cover several needs. For the wider picture of choosing and standardising consoles, read our guide to the surgical motor system.
Pairing a dermatome with a mesher
In extensive burns, a single sheet of harvested skin seldom covers the wound. The graft is then passed through a mesher, which perforates it so that it can be expanded. The NOUVAG Mesher places the split-thickness graft on a carrier plate and perforates it in a regular pattern, widening coverage and reducing extra donor-site harvesting. The knife roller is removable for maintenance and cleaning.
Because the harvested sheet goes straight into the mesher, graft width and carrier size should match. Read our skin graft mesher guide and the comparison of sheet and mesh grafts to plan the pair.
Practical checks before buying
Ask for a demonstration with your own team, including blade change, depth adjustment and cleaning. Check the reprocessing instructions for the dermatome and handpiece, the number of cycles, and the supply of blades. Confirm electrical safety documentation, installation and user training.
Medical devices are registered with the relevant authority in the UAE; confirm current requirements for your facility before ordering.
- Blade supply and replacement lead time.
- Reprocessing instructions for dermatome and mesher.
- Service route and spare handpiece policy.
- Training for surgeons and theatre nurses.

Frequently asked questions
What does a dermatome do?
It harvests a thin, even sheet of skin, called a split-thickness graft, from a donor area at a set thickness and width.
What cutting depths does the NOUVAG Dermatome offer?
The cutting depth is adjustable from 0.05 to 1.0 mm, with cutting widths of 75 or 100 mm.
Do I need a mesher with a dermatome?
Only when the graft must be expanded to cover a larger wound. For small wounds a sheet graft may be used.
Can the same console run other instruments?
The TCM 3000 BL also drives drills and saws, so it can serve other reconstructive tasks.
