Electrosurgical Unit for Gynecology: Equipment for the Whole Department

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

An electrosurgical unit for gynecology has to support a wider spread of procedures than most buyers expect: open and laparoscopic surgery, vessel sealing, supracervical hysterectomy, cervical loop excision and hysteroscopic resection, often in the same week. Each procedure uses a different instrument and sometimes a different current type. This guide for gynecology department heads and biomedical engineers explains how to match generator and instruments to the case mix, with examples from BOWA and Richard Wolf.

Mapping procedures to energy types

Start with the list of operations. Laparoscopic gynecology relies on bipolar coagulation and cutting, plus sealing for pedicles. Open gynecology uses monopolar pencils and bipolar forceps. Cervical procedures such as LEEP use loop electrodes. Hysteroscopic resection needs a resectoscope with monopolar or bipolar current, and a distension medium matched to that current type.

Because bipolar electrosurgery in gynecology is common in laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, ensure that the generator offers robust bipolar outputs as well as monopolar ones. Professional guidance, for example from bodies such as the RCOG on electrosurgery safety, is a useful reference for training and protocols.

Equipment planning should also reflect staffing. Where the same nurses cover laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and outpatient LEEP, a single unified platform with consistent menus reduces errors compared with several unrelated devices.

Laparoscopic gynecology: sealing and supracervical hysterectomy

For vessel control in laparoscopy, bipolar sealing reduces instrument exchanges. ERGOseal seals and cuts vessels up to 7 mm according to BOWA, with a Maryland jaw offering 22 mm sealing and 20 mm cutting length, and is indicated among other fields for gynaecological surgery. It is recognised automatically on the ARC 400 in ARCseal mode.

MetraLOOP is designed for laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy, detaching the uterus with a loop. It comes in two loop sizes, Ø 100 mm and Ø 175 mm, with single-use loops and reusable inner and outer shafts, a Ø 5 mm instrument with ceramic insulation. It works with common HF generators and is optimised for the dedicated MetraLOOP mode of the ARC 400.

Which electrosurgical unit for gynecology: ARC 400 and the case mix

The ARC 400 covers general, visceral, gynaecological, urological and cardiac surgery with monopolar and bipolar outputs of up to 400 W, sealing through LIGATION and COMFORT instrument recognition. SimCOAG allows two bipolar instruments to be activated simultaneously, useful when two surgeons work in laparoscopy.

For a department that also performs hysteroscopic resection, the Richard Wolf HF-GENERATOR 2260 offers presets for bipolar enucleation, laparoscopy and hysteroscopic resection with instrument-specific voltage limits, designed for use with existing Richard Wolf instruments. See also BOWA ARC 400 overview.

When specifying sockets, count the instruments that may be connected at once: a laparoscopic list can involve a monopolar hook, a bipolar grasper, a sealing instrument and perhaps an argon probe.

Hysteroscopic resection and LEEP

For operative hysteroscopy, the Richard Wolf Princess is a slim 7 mm (21 Fr) continuous-irrigation resectoscope, optionally expandable to 8 mm. Its small diameter lowers insertion resistance and reduces trauma to the cervical canal. It is a hybrid design for monopolar and bipolar use with the same basic instrument, a rotating double sheath, and a BIVAP bipolar vaporization electrode for endometrial ablation and myomas.

For electrosurgical excision of the cervix, hospitals use loop electrodes with a suitable generator and smoke evacuation. Bipolar hysteroscopic systems from various manufacturers exist; compare them on the criteria in this guide rather than on brand.

Putting together the specification

List the generators, instruments, return pads, footswitches, smoke evacuation and training you need, and ask for a staged plan if the budget is limited. Confirm the registration of each item with the relevant UAE authority.

Beckfinity's specialists can build a configuration for your gynecology theatre and arrange installation and user training. Contact us to discuss your case mix.

Plan training around real cases: a half-day session in your own theatre, with scrub nurses, surgeons and engineers together, usually brings more value than a general lecture.

Frequently asked questions

Which energy is used in gynecologic laparoscopy?

Mainly bipolar coagulation and sealing, with monopolar used selectively. The choice is the surgeon's.

What is MetraLOOP used for?

Laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy, to detach the uterus with a loop.

How wide is the Princess resectoscope?

7 mm (21 Fr), optionally expandable to 8 mm.

Can one generator serve laparoscopy and hysteroscopy?

Yes, if it offers the needed outputs and presets. Check instrument compatibility for each procedure.

Is smoke evacuation needed for LEEP?

It is recommended, because the plume is generated at the cervix in an open field.
