Morcellator Speed Settings: How to Set rpm, Suction and Modes Safely

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

Morcellator speed settings determine how fast tissue is cut and drawn out, and they work together with suction, blade condition and tissue type. This guide explains how an electronic morcellator works, what the rpm range really controls, how modes and foot switches are used, and which questions theatre teams should settle before a case, using the NOUVAG TCM 3000 BL and the Richard Wolf PIRANHA as examples.

How an electronic morcellator works

A morcellator is a tube with a rotating cylindrical blade at the tip. Tissue is drawn into the tube by a grasper or by suction and is cut into strips by the blade, which is driven by a motor. The strips travel out through the tube, so a large specimen leaves the body through a small access. Electronic morcellators use a control unit to set the motor speed, usually through a foot switch.

Two application areas dominate: laparoscopic gynaecology, where morcellation is used for uterine and fibroid tissue, and endoscopic urology, where morcellators remove tissue after prostate enucleation. The equipment is similar in principle, but the blade, tube and suction arrangement differ.

What rpm controls, and typical ranges

Speed is the number of blade rotations per minute. Lower speeds give finer control and are used when the tube is close to critical structures or when the surgeon wants to start gently. Higher speeds shorten the time to remove firm tissue but demand a stable grasp and good vision. The best speed is the lowest that keeps tissue moving without stalling the blade.

The NOUVAG TCM 3000 BL morcellator control unit covers 50 to 1,000 rpm. The surgeon can set the speed freely in VARIO mode or select one of three predefined programs with fixed speed ranges. Torque is up to 100 Ncm (maximum 80 Ncm at 200-400 rpm), the foot switch is IPX8, and the unit is the control unit of the NOUVAG Morcellation Set.

  • VARIO mode: stepless speed from 50 to 1,000 rpm
  • Three preset program buttons with fixed speed ranges
  • Torque up to 100 Ncm, with reduced maximum at 200-400 rpm
  • Finely responsive IPX8 foot switch

Morcellator speed on Richard Wolf PIRANHA

For prostate enucleation the Richard Wolf PIRANHA system uses a morcescope, a suction pump set and the Vmax blade, available in disposable and reusable versions. The Vmax blade speed is 1,500 rpm. The footswitch toggles between PIRANHA mode and suction mode, and the suction pump collects tissue in a separate container so that it remains suitable for histology.

Because the blade speed is defined by the system, the practical settings for the team are the suction level, the irrigation flow and the choice of mode. Ask your Richard Wolf specialist for the instructions for use of your specific configuration.

How to use a morcellator: pre-case checks

Before the case verify that the foot switch is connected and responds, that the blade rotates when activated outside the patient, that suction is connected where the system requires it and that all sterile parts are complete. Agree with the surgeon the starting speed and who will adjust it.

During the case keep the cutting edge in view, activate the blade only when tissue is engaged, and lower the speed if the tube vibrates or the blade stalls. If a containment bag is used, follow the manufacturer's guidance. Our articles on morcellation safety and containment bags and the BOWA ERGO 300 morcellator give further context, and the overview of tissue morcellation explains the principle.

Maintenance and service questions

Blades dull with use. Track the number of cases per blade, replace as the instructions state, and never re-sterilise a single-use blade. Motors and cables should be inspected for wear, and the foot switch checked for liquid ingress.

Ask your supplier about the local service route, loan units and the availability of blades in the UAE. Confirm product registration with the relevant UAE authority, as requirements change.

Frequently asked questions

What speed range does the NOUVAG TCM 3000 BL offer?

50 to 1,000 rpm, set freely in VARIO mode or through three preset programs with fixed ranges.

What is the blade speed of the Richard Wolf PIRANHA?

The Vmax blade speed is 1,500 rpm, according to the manufacturer data.

Should I always use maximum speed?

No. Use the lowest speed that moves tissue steadily; high speed demands a stable grasp and good visibility.

Is a morcellator electronic?

Most modern units use an electronic control unit with a foot switch to set motor speed.
