ulrich Max 2M: Compact MRI Injector and How It Compares with Max 3

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

ulrich Max 2M is a compact, cordless contrast media injector with two media connection points, one for contrast and one for saline, used in MRI, PET-MRI and contrast-enhanced mammography. The manufacturer positions it as a cost-efficient choice even for sites with lower patient throughput. This overview explains how it works, the technical data and the practical differences between Max 2M and Max 3 so that you can choose the right configuration.

What Max 2M is designed for

Max 2M automates the controlled administration of contrast media and saline. It injects directly from original containers: one contrast medium container of up to 200 ml (MRI) or 250 ml (mammography) and one saline container of up to 1,000 ml.

It is built for imaging sites where one contrast agent is used and the list is moderate, such as a single MRI unit in a clinic or a mammography room offering contrast-enhanced examinations. For such sites, a compact MRI injector with fewer connections avoids paying for capability that is not needed.

A typical working day is straightforward: the 24-hour cassette is inserted in the morning, the contrast and saline containers are connected, new patient tubing is attached for each patient and the injection is started from the terminal. Because Max 2M has only one contrast connection, staff should check at the start of the list that the container holds enough for the scheduled patients.

Cordless operation and safety functions

Max 2M runs on a battery and communicates with its terminal by Wi-Fi, so the room is free of trailing cables. The base is compact: 530 × 530 × 1,372 mm, weighing about 40 kg, which makes it easy to position in small rooms.

It uses the same 24-hour Easy-Click-Cassette as Max 3. The cassette is inserted once a day and can be used for any number of injections in that period; an RFID chip blocks reuse after 24 hours. Air detection in the patient tubing stops the injection, a SafeConnect touch-protected connection supports hygienic handling and an integrated Keep-Vein-Open (KVO) function is included. Maximum system pressure is 14 bar (203.1 psi).

Air detection in the patient tubing and the touch-protected SafeConnect connection are the safety functions most relevant to daily routine; the integrated Keep-Vein-Open function helps maintain venous access between phases of an examination. Train staff to recognise the alarm messages and to act on them according to the instructions for use.

  • One contrast and one saline connection
  • 24-hour cassette with RFID reuse protection
  • Air detection in the patient tubing
  • SafeConnect touch-protected connection and KVO function
  • Battery operation and Wi-Fi link to the terminal

Max 2M vs Max 3

The main difference is the number of media connections. Max 3 has two contrast connections and one saline connection, with the CM-Loop function that switches automatically to a second container of the same contrast medium and optional CM-Select for changing to a different medium without changing the cassette. Max 2M has one of each, so when the contrast container is empty it must be replaced manually.

Both share the cassette concept, cordless design, 14 bar pressure and the same footprint. If your list rarely exceeds one container per day and you use one agent, Max 2M is likely sufficient. If several patients are scanned back to back, or two agents are used, Max 3 saves interruptions. See the dedicated Max 3 overview and our MRI injector price article.

Growth should also be considered. If you expect the MRI list to grow or a second contrast agent to be introduced, ask whether it is easier to start with Max 3 now or to replace Max 2M later, and compare the two options in your business case.

Planning an installation

Check the floor space, the parking position, the charging socket and the Wi-Fi coverage between the control room and the magnet room. Confirm the MR labelling and placement rules for your scanner with the supplier; the topic is covered in our MR safety article.
