ulrich Max 3 Cordless MRI Injector: Features and Use Cases

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

ulrich Max 3 is a cordless contrast media injector for MRI with three media connection points: two for contrast and one for saline. It is also used for PET-MRI and contrast-enhanced mammography. This overview covers how the system works, what the 24-hour cassette and automatic switchover mean in daily use, the technical data given by the manufacturer and the departments it is designed for. Beckfinity distributes it in the UAE.

What the Max 3 MRI injector does

Max 3 automates the controlled administration of contrast media and saline in MRI and PET-MRI and in contrast-enhanced mammography (CEDM/CESM). It injects directly from original containers, so no separate syringes need to be filled for each patient.

Contrast and saline are delivered through a cassette and patient tubing. The system is controlled from a terminal and communicates with the injector by Wi-Fi, which keeps the magnet room free of long cables.

For the technologist, a typical day starts with inserting the 24-hour cassette and connecting the contrast and saline containers. For each patient, new patient tubing is attached, the protocol is entered at the terminal and the injection is started from the control room. The terminal and injector stay in contact over Wi-Fi, and the battery is recharged between lists.

Three media: CM-Loop and CM-Select

The three-media design gives two contrast connections and one saline connection. CM-Loop switches automatically to a second container of the same contrast medium, so a list is not interrupted when a container is empty. The optional CM-Select function lets staff switch to a different contrast medium without changing the cassette, which suits sites that use more than one agent.

If your department uses a single agent and a modest list, the compact Max 2M with one contrast and one saline connection may be enough. Our MRI injector price article explains what changes between the two when you compare quotations.

When deciding between two and three media, count how often a container runs out mid-list and whether two different contrast agents are in regular use. If either happens weekly, the third connection quickly pays back in saved interruptions; if neither does, a simpler configuration may be the more economical choice.

  • Two contrast and one saline connection
  • CM-Loop automatic container switchover
  • Optional CM-Select for changing contrast medium without a new cassette
  • Containers up to 2 × 200 ml / 2 × 250 ml contrast and 1,000 ml saline

Cordless operation, cassette and safety

As a cordless MRI injector, Max 3 runs on a battery and has a compact four-caster base for positioning in small MRI and mammography rooms. Its dimensions are 530 × 530 × 1,372 mm and it weighs about 40 kg.

The 24-hour Easy-Click-Cassette is inserted once a day and can be used for any number of injections in that period; an RFID chip blocks reuse after 24 hours. Air detection in the patient tubing stops the injection if air is found. Maximum system pressure is 14 bar (203.1 psi). Labelling and placement for the magnet room are covered in our MR safety article.

Ask the supplier to explain battery run time, charging routine and what the injector does if Wi-Fi is interrupted, and ask for these answers from the manufacturer's documentation. A good site visit also checks that the magnet-room floor, doorway and parking position suit a unit of about 40 kg on four casters.

PET-MRI and contrast-enhanced mammography

Because the same injector is used for MRI, PET-MRI and contrast-enhanced mammography, one platform can serve several rooms, reducing the number of different consumables and the training required. For mammography the contrast container size and workflow differ from MRI, so check the container options given by the manufacturer for each application.

When you plan a PET-MRI or mammography suite, confirm room dimensions, power for charging and the Wi-Fi coverage for the terminal.

Questions worth asking before you buy: which containers are approved for each application, how the cassette is supplied and re-ordered, and how staff are trained on the first day of operation.
