Buying a C-arm for sale: used, refurbished or new

Updated 14 October 2026 · 4 min read

Anyone searching for a C-arm for sale in the UAE will quickly find used, refurbished and rental offers next to new equipment. The lower purchase cost is real, but so are the risks: unknown tube history, ageing detectors, discontinued software and weak after-sales support. This article helps budget-conscious clinics compare the options on engineering facts rather than on the headline offer.

Used, refurbished and rented C-arm: the differences

A used C-arm is sold as found, usually with limited documentation. A refurbished C-arm should have been inspected, repaired and tested to a documented procedure, with parts replaced where needed and a warranty from the refurbisher. A rented or leased C-arm moves the capital cost to a monthly fee and may suit a new service line or a short project.

The terms are not used consistently in the market. Always ask exactly what was replaced, who did the work and whether the unit was returned to manufacturer specification. Treat a refurbished label as a claim to verify, not as proof of quality.

A practical first step is to estimate how many procedures per week you expect and how costly downtime would be. For occasional use, rental or a refurbished unit with a written warranty may be reasonable; for daily use, service availability becomes the deciding factor.

What actually wears out

The X-ray tube is the main consumable. Its remaining life depends on exposure history, heat loading and how the unit was warmed up and cooled, and this is rarely visible from outside. Ask for the tube exposure counter, the service log and the install date of the tube, and be cautious if none can be produced.

The imaging chain matters just as much. An image intensifier loses brightness and develops distortion with age. A flat panel can develop dead pixels, lag and artefacts, and replacement panels are expensive. The generator, cables and high-voltage components also age, and batteries on wireless or battery-backed units are a frequent failure. Our C-arm troubleshooting guide lists the typical symptoms.

Ask for a test exposure on a phantom at both the lowest dose and the maximum output. Noisy, dark or uneven images, overheating during long fluoroscopy and noise from the arc drives are signs that the unit will need spending soon after purchase.

Software, DICOM and parts availability

Older units may run operating systems or software versions that the manufacturer no longer supports, which complicates DICOM connectivity with a modern PACS and raises cybersecurity questions. Check whether the model is still supported, whether spare parts remain available and who in the UAE can service it.

For vascular work such as DSA and road-mapping, confirm that the required software licences are present and transferable. A vascular C-arm for sale on the second-hand market may lack the options that made it useful in the first place.

Import and regulatory checks in the UAE

Medical devices must be registered and imported through authorised channels, and X-ray equipment is also subject to radiation regulation. Confirm current requirements with MOHAP and your emirate's health authority, such as DHA or DOH, and with the federal radiation regulator, before you buy. Rules for used equipment can differ from those for new, and they change.

Request the manufacturer's declaration, conformity documents, a service history and a full acceptance test after installation. See also our overview of C-arm radiation regulations in the UAE.

Also clarify who acts as the importer and registration holder, and whether the warranty survives a change of owner. Without clear answers, delays at import and problems during facility inspections are possible.

When new is the better value

Consider total cost of ownership: purchase, installation, annual service, tube replacement, downtime and training. An image-intensifier model such as the Perlove PLX C1112 offers pulsed fluoroscopy, digital radiography, automatic kV/mA tracking, DICOM and remote exposure as a new, supported unit, and it is a practical entry point for clinics that would otherwise look at used equipment.

To compare new options with a rental or refurbished quotation, see the Perlove range and our C-arm price guide. Beckfinity's specialists can prepare a like-for-like quotation on request.

Frequently asked questions

Is a refurbished C-arm safe to use?

It can be, if it has been inspected and tested to a documented procedure, passes an acceptance test and complies with local radiation rules. Always ask for the report and the list of replaced parts.

How can I check the remaining tube life?

Ask for the tube exposure counter, service history and replacement date. A service engineer can read the counters from the unit.

Is renting a C-arm a good idea?

Renting suits a short-term project or a service line you want to test. For regular daily use, compare the rental fees with the total cost of owning a new unit.

What documents should I request?

The service log, tube history, software and licence list, conformity documents, a test report and written warranty terms.
